California Carnivores

California Carnivores is a carnivorous plant specialty retail nursery located in Forestville, Sonoma County, California. Founded by Peter D’Amato in 1989, the nursery is one of the largest and most diverse carnivorous plant specialty operations in the United States, and has shipped live plants year-round to customers in all 50 states.

Nursery History and Legacy

Peter D’Amato began growing carnivorous plants in the 1970s and formally opened California Carnivores in Sonoma County in 1989. His 1998 book The Savage Garden became a definitive cultivation reference for the hobby, winning book awards from the American Horticultural Society and the Garden Writers Association of America; the revised edition was published in 2013 as The Revised Savage Garden. Peter was a co-founder of the Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society, a frequent contributor to the International Carnivorous Plant Society’s Carnivorous Plant Newsletter, and a widely published lecturer and television guest. Peter passed away in 2024, and the nursery he founded continues under the stewardship of his long-time partner Damon Collingsworth.

Current Team and Collection Scope

Damon Collingsworth, the current owner and manager, purchased his first Cape Sundew from Peter at a local flea market in 1988 and has been collecting carnivorous plants ever since. Before returning to California Carnivores he managed the nursery at Malesiana Tropicals in Borneo. Damon has expanded the nursery into the country’s largest carnivorous plant collection and retail operation, and has collaborated with botanical gardens across the United States on large-scale carnivorous plant installations, including a permanent exhibit at the San Francisco Zoo. The team also includes Mike Wilder (tissue culture laboratory manager, specializing in Mexican Pinguicula hybridization and Heliamphora propagation), Daniela Ribbecke (social media and operations), Tiffany Brainard (mail order fulfillment), Muntaser Aquil and Alison Carrington-Tardif (office and propagation support). The online catalog covers 11 genera of carnivorous plants and more than 350 species and cultivars.

Retail Policy and Shipping Practice

The nursery is permanently closed to in-person visits and operates exclusively as an online retailer, shipping year-round to all 50 U.S. states via USPS Priority Mail. Order processing requires 1 to 3 weeks during normal periods and may extend during peak season, with an additional 2 to 7 business days for delivery. Total time from order placement to arrival typically ranges from 2 to 4 weeks. International orders are not accepted for live plants or seeds. Each shipment includes detailed cultivation guidance and dormancy reminders. All plants are guaranteed to arrive healthy; customers may request a refund or replacement within 48 hours of delivery by emailing a clear photograph of any damaged plant.

Cultivation Knowledge and Free Education

The nursery website and YouTube channel (California_Carnivores) host a complete cultivation knowledge base covering 13 plant genera, with species-specific guides on sowing, temperature control, dormancy, soil mixes, watering, and feeding protocols authored by Damon and the team. Common topics include temperate dormancy requirements (sustained temperatures of approximately 1 to 7°C for three months or longer), highland versus lowland Nepenthes cultivation, Mexican Pinguicula winter succulent dormancy patterns, high-altitude cool conditions for Heliamphora (sun pitcher plants), cold running-water root management for Darlingtonia (cobra plants), and home landscaping projects such as Pinguicula walls and non-draining bog gardens. These free resources serve as a standard reference for carnivorous plant enthusiasts from beginner to advanced levels.
