Nursery History and Legacy

Peter D’Amato began growing carnivorous plants in the 1970s and formally opened California Carnivores in Sonoma County in 1989. His 1998 book The Savage Garden became a definitive cultivation reference for the hobby, winning book awards from the American Horticultural Society and the Garden Writers Association of America; the revised edition was published in 2013 as The Revised Savage Garden. The team also includes Mike Wilder (tissue culture laboratory manager, specializing in Mexican Pinguicula hybridization and Heliamphora propagation), Daniela Ribbecke (social media and operations), Tiffany Brainard (mail order fulfillment), Muntaser Aquil and Alison Carrington-Tardif (office and propagation support).
