Captive Exotics

Greg Bourke与Richard Nunn合著的《Carnivorous Plants and their Habitats》两卷本和《Carnivorous Plants of Australia》系列是全球食虫植物研究的重要参考文献。

Founder Background

Greg Bourke is a plant collector, breeder, and amateur botanist who lives in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, surrounded by natural bushland. He became passionate about carnivorous plants from a young age, often hiking in the bush with his parents. His expertise grew over the years, leading him to work at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and appear on ABC’s Gardening Australia program to share his knowledge of carnivorous plant cultivation. Greg is an active member of the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) and has co-authored the landmark book series “Carnivorous Plants of Australia” with Richard Nunn, documenting the diversity of Australia’s native carnivorous flora.

Specialty Plants

Captive Exotics specializes in tuberous sundews (Drosera spp.), one of the most diverse groups within the genus, divided into four main subgroups. The nursery also offers a wide range of carnivorous plants including Sarracenia, Dionaea muscipula (Venus Flytraps), Nepenthes, Heliamphora, and Utricularia. Greg is particularly passionate about selectively breeding Utricularia, which can capture prey using forces measured at over 600 times the force of gravity and can flower for up to nine months per year.

Scientific Contributions

Greg Bourke co-authored the two-volume work “Carnivorous Plants and their Habitats” and the “Carnivorous Plants of Australia” series with Richard Nunn, which are considered essential references for carnivorous plant researchers worldwide. He regularly contributes to the Australasian Carnivorous Plant Society journal and participates in ICPS international conferences and research projects. As an amateur botanist, Greg has discovered and documented new distribution records for carnivorous plants during field trips to Southeast Asia and Central Borneo, contributing significantly to the understanding and conservation of global carnivorous plant diversity.
