Organization Overview and Historical Background
Environmental Concern Inc. (EC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental organization registered in Maryland, USA, with its headquarters at 8133 Elliott Road, Suite 240, Easton, MD 21601. The organization was founded in 1972 by Dr. Edward Garbisch and has, for more than five decades, remained committed to wetland restoration, native plant propagation and wetland science education throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Ecological Restoration and Shoreline Recovery
EC’s Restoration division developed a bioengineering protocol based on Live Stake technology that has been used to stabilize and rebuild shorelines along the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Since 1972, EC has successfully restored more than 50 miles of shoreline, working across salt marshes, tidal freshwater wetlands and sites degraded by invasive Phragmites. The organization also operates a 7-acre native plant nursery at the headwaters of the St. Michaels River in St. Michaels, Maryland.
Native Wetland Nursery and Plant Supply
EC’s in-house native plant nursery propagates more than 100 species of native wetland and upland plants each year. The nursery supplies trees, shrubs and stabilization grasses to both wholesale and retail buyers and also provides plant material for EC’s own restoration and education projects. A downloadable Wholesale Nursery Catalog is published each season, listing available species, sizes and the ordering procedure for landscape professionals, wetland consultants and stormwater management projects.
Education Outreach and Volunteer Programs
EC’s Education department offers multiple professional development courses each year for wetland practitioners, consultants, agency staff and non-profit partners, with the 2026 Professional Course schedule now officially announced and open for registration. The organization also runs the Eastern Shore Seed Stewards for Monarchs program, which provides a nine-step Milkweed seed harvesting guideline for public volunteers, and continues to publish and train teachers on the K-12 curriculum WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands.
Donation and Ways to Support
As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, Environmental Concern accepts donations from individuals, businesses and foundations, with all contributions eligible for federal tax deduction in accordance with applicable law. In addition to direct monetary gifts, EC welcomes volunteer participation in nursery propagation, on-site shoreline restoration work and educational program delivery, allowing donors and supporters to engage with EC’s wetland mission through the channel that best fits their interests.
