Organisation Profile and History
The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects / Association des architectes paysagistes du Canada (CSLA / AAPC) is a non-profit, national members-based professional organization founded in 1934 and the only national-level body representing landscape architects in Canada. Headquartered in Ottawa, the CSLA represents over 3,200 landscape architects and landscape architecture students across nine provincial and territorial component associations (AALA, APALA, BCSLA, MALA, NWTALA, NuALA, OALA, AAPQ and SALA), and operates the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (LAAC), the College of Fellows, the Committee on Climate and Biodiversity and other standing bodies under the current President Michael and Executive Director Michelle Legault, who jointly leads the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (LACF).
Mission, Vision and Core Values
The CSLA’s vision is a highly performing landscape architecture profession that is valued at all levels of government and society, with enhanced abilities to transform landscapes for our common future and to build linkages between a healthy and sustainable environment and thriving communities. Its mission is to provide support and resources to members, advocate for the profession, deliver solutions to current and future challenges, and demonstrate the value of landscape architecture. Core values advance the profession, lead by example through environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice, and govern in a fiscally responsible manner. The CSLA plays four interlocking roles: industry advocate, professional accreditation body, education coordinator and international liaison, and is the Canadian national member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), participating in the CC-IUCN, FIRPAC and the Canadian Climate Change Adaptation Platform while operating bilingually in English and French.
Advocacy and Public Policy
As the voice of the Canadian landscape architecture profession, the CSLA regularly engages federal, provincial and municipal governments on urban design, urban renewal, sustainable development, climate change, cultural heritage and biodiversity, with published position papers covering sustainable housing, the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI), Truth and Reconciliation (UNDRIP), climate adaptation, nature-based solutions, mental health and the power of nature, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy; the Society also advocates licensure of landscape architects in every province and territory. The June 2026 publication Making the Case: Landscape Architects as Infrastructure Leaders in Canada sets out the profession’s contribution to housing, mobility and climate defence, paired with the Canadian Landscape Architect Compensation and Benefits Study; the Society also publishes the bilingual LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES (L|P) magazine, monthly bulletins, member directories and a social media programme, and landscape architecture has been recognized by the Government of Canada as a STEM discipline.
Awards, Honours and Recognition
CSLA operates a multi-tier awards programme that recognizes professional achievement across the career span: the Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture is the highest national honour; the annual CSLA Awards of Excellence celebrate distinctive design, ground-breaking research and sustainable landscape management; and the College of Fellows, first electing four members in 1964 and formally established at the 1979 Charlottetown CSLA Congress, has inducted a cumulative total of 270 Fellows, with the title FCSLA in English and FAAPC in French awarded at the Investiture Ceremony at each CSLA Congress. Further standing awards include the Community Service Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Schwabenbauer President’s Award, Teaching Award, Emerging Professional Award, the CSLA Recognition Awards and the Student Awards of Excellence as well as National Urban Design Awards; the KEEP peer mentorship programme pairs students, interns and mid-career practitioners with Fellows, and in 2026 the College of Fellows welcomed 13 new members at the Halifax Investiture Ceremony and named Nina-Marie Lister the 2026 Honorary Member of the CSLA.
Accreditation, Continuing Education and Career Resources
Through the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (LAAC) the CSLA accredits Canadian university programmes in landscape architecture, with reviews every five years and mutual recognition with the American Society of Landscape Architects’ LAAB. LAAC-accredited programmes are offered at the Université de Montréal, the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, the University of Guelph (BLA and MLA), the University of Manitoba, and the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto; Dalhousie University’s Bachelor of Landscape Architecture is a current Candidacy Program. LAAC and LAAB signed a 2026–2030 Memorandum of Understanding. The Society further supports the profession through the CSLA Continuing Education programme, the Resource Library, the Jobs and RFPs board, the landADAPT climate adaptation case study series, the Canadian Landscape Standard (CLS), recurring webinars, the CSLA-hosted annual Congress, the travel grant programme and the 2025–2026 publications including the AI and Landscape Architecture white paper, the Canadian Landscape Architect Compensation and Benefits Study, and the revised Section 5 Growing Medium of the Canadian Landscape Standard.
