Background and history
Austin Pond Society (APS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit water gardening organization based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1991 and made up of more than 100 members, the society is dedicated to promoting backyard pond culture and to distributing practical information on pond construction, routine maintenance, water lilies, lotus, bog plants, goldfish and koi keeping. The society is registered at the Zilker Botanical Garden clubhouse, 2220 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78746, with day-to-day operations supported by Wild Apricot membership software.
Monthly meetings and the annual pond tour
Members meet on the third Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Zilker Botanical Garden Auditorium, with the exception of December. Meetings feature light refreshments, invited speakers, and round-table discussions on pond filtration, aquatic plant health, koi husbandry and seasonal pond care, making the society the most stable learning and networking hub for water gardeners in Central Texas. The signature event is the Annual Pond & Garden Tour held in June, when members and sponsors open their own backyard ponds to the public for a self-guided weekend of inspiration and education.
Educational resources and member benefits
The society maintains a small reference library of more than twenty classic water gardening titles published between 1986 and 2008, including Philip Swindells’ Encyclopedia of Water Gardening, Anthony Archer-Wills’ The Water Gardener, the Home Depot and Miracle Gro introductory guides, and many others, all available for borrowing at monthly meetings and on tour days. Members also receive the monthly electronic newsletter The Stream and access the society’s official Facebook group for sharing pond photographs, videos and troubleshooting conversations with fellow enthusiasts.
Charitable giving and local community impact
Proceeds from the annual pond and garden tour are donated to a long list of Austin-area community organizations, including the Austin Police Operation Blue Santa holiday program, the Austin Independent School District, Bastrop State Park, Dell Children’s Medical Center, Down Home Ranch, KLRU’s Central Texas Gardener public television program, Safe Place, Wright House and the Zilker Botanical Garden itself. Funds raised support local water-gardening education, youth nature experiences and horticultural therapy programs for adults with disabilities.
