Background and Positioning
The Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (CAFE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the university’s integrated platform for research and outreach education in agriculture, food systems, and the environment. It brings together the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station (founded 1882), the UMass Cranberry Station at East Wareham (founded 1911), UMass Extension (Massachusetts partner in the national Cooperative Extension System, with extension education initiated in the Commonwealth in 1909), and the Water Resources Research Center (established 1965 under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964). The Center is based in the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst and coordinates with the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the College of Engineering.
