Heritage and Organizational Mission
The Société Nationale d’Horticulture de France (SNHF) was founded on 11 June 1827 in Paris by Vicomte Héricart de Thury as the Société d’Horticulture de Paris. Renamed Société Royale d’Horticulture in 1835, it merged with the Société Nationale d’Horticulture de la Seine in 1854 to become the Société Impériale Centrale d’Horticulture, and adopted its present name in 1885. Headquartered at 84 rue de Grenelle, Paris 7e, since 1860, SNHF operates as a loi 1901 non-profit association. It was recognised as an association d’utilité publique in 1855 and granted d’intérêt général status in 2012. With nearly two centuries of continuous activity, SNHF promotes horticultural knowledge, bridges amateur and professional practice, and participates in the conservation and dissemination of France’s plant heritage.
Academic Programs, Competitions and Scientific Research
SNHF coordinates multiple thematic sections (sections thématiques), of which the Section Roses, founded in 1850, is the oldest. The Section runs the Grand Prix de la Rose SNHF, consolidating more than 15,000 evaluations from local juries and working closely with France’s national rose society. Since 2001, the Concours National des Jardins Potagers (CNJP) has recognised outstanding vegetable gardens across six categories covering private, collective, landscape, educational, shared and therapeutic plots. The Conseil Scientifique brings together twenty experts in plant physiology, pathology, genetics, botany, environment and horticultural history, meeting four to five times per year. Its 2026 annual scientific symposium, held on 29 May at the Académie d’Agriculture de France in Paris, addresses “Le sol, source de vie” (Soil, the source of life).
Publications, Member Services and Educational Outreach
Jardins de France, the association’s flagship quarterly, brings together some fifteen editorial committee members and over 200 volunteer contributors. After issue 680 (spring 2026), the journal transitions to a fully digital format hosted at jardinsdefrance.org. SNHF’s membership spans four collèges covering individual members, associations and training establishments, related professionals and public bodies. Members enjoy reduced activity fees, library borrowing privileges, access to thematic sections and a community of fellow enthusiasts. The association’s library holds irreplaceable French horticultural archives, supported by volunteer cataloguers and the bibliothèque patronage programme. Continuing-education offerings include colloquia, conferences, webinars, study voyages and the online Fiches Plantes SNHF and Téléchargeables resources.
International Cooperation and Industry Impact
SNHF functions as France’s central platform for horticultural coordination, working alongside the Société Française des Roses, the Musée National des châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau, the Paris botanical garden community and Angers Loire Métropole. Its partner network includes leading industry names such as Meilland International, SAS Gally and the Pépinières Chatelain, as well as associations including the Association des Auditeurs des Cours du Luxembourg (AACL), the Association des amis du Potager du Roi, the Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées (CCVS) and the Fédération nationale des jardins familiaux et collectifs (FNJFC). Operating under France’s loi 1901 framework, SNHF maintains active dialogue with European and global horticultural bodies, serving as a pivotal hub for horticultural knowledge dissemination and plant heritage protection in France.
