About the Society
The Société Bretonne du Rhododendron (abbreviated SBR) is a non-profit enthusiast society dedicated to the genus Rhododendron, based in the Brittany region of western France. Its activities revolve around rhododendron taxonomy, cultivation, hybridisation and photographic record-keeping, presenting the performance of rhododendrons in Brittany’s oceanic climate through a French-language website that also offers English switches on its login and identification pages.
Mission and Services
The society promotes the exchange of cultivation experience, nomenclature knowledge and hybridisation experiments among enthusiasts. Its online services include a taxonomy browser (Taxonomie), a foliage feature (Feuillages), a hybridisation log (Hybridations) and a site-wide search engine (Moteur de recherche). Members may additionally use the seed bank (Banque de Graines), borrow from the library (Bibliothèque), read the bulletin « Bulletins de la SBR » and contribute to the monthly photo series Au fil des mois.
Membership and Fees
Visitor registration on the site is free; only full society membership (Adhésion) requires a fee of 25 euros per individual or 30 euros per family (a couple and any children) per year, activated by an administrator once the payment is received. Visitors can subscribe to monthly photo notifications, while members gain access to the seed bank, library loans, forum discussions, hybridisation uploads and direct contact with the bureau.
Bulletins and Photo Library
The bulletin « Bulletins de la SBR » is published periodically online in the Publications section, with archive issues available to members. The society also maintains a large rhododendron photo album organised both by category and by month (Au fil des mois), together with a Scenes Parcs & Jardins feature for parks and gardens. Members may upload their own hybridisation results with captions, building a shared cultivation archive over the years.
Networks and Contact
SBR is an independent French amateur society and stays in contact with other rhododendron societies across Europe and with the United Kingdom’s Rhododendron groups; its Rhododendrons International sub-page curates references to these networks.
