站内关键词把常种的属列了一长串:Pulsatilla(白头翁)、Saxifraga(虎耳草)、Daphne(瑞香)、Lewisia、Dionysia、Leontopodium(火绒草)、Dianthus(石竹)、Crocus、Iris、Viola 和 Cyclamen。

A Couple’s Rock Garden

Raritäten im Steingarten (“Rarities in the Rock Garden”) is kept by Jürgen and Susanne Lohr in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, a small town in Saxony, Germany. They have lived there since 1985, and since 1991 they have been growing alpine plants on the strip of ground that came with their flat. It began with one perennial bed and a corner to sit in; rocks, a small pond, a little greenhouse and a propagation bench were added one at a time until the planted area kept growing. On the About page Susanne notes that a neighbour first introduced her husband to alpine plants, and that she later caught the same bug.

From the Old Plot to the New House

When they moved in June 2018 they had to give up, with a heavy heart, the garden they had worked for more than twenty years. The new plot turned out to be almost entirely in full sun, with hardly a spot of half shade, which suits neither the small hostas nor the cypripediums. So the couple built shade themselves, bed by bed. Photographs of the old garden remain in the section called “Unser alter Garten”, while the new one is being documented as it develops; it took six years before the first proper set of pictures went online. Jürgen works at a nursery, and propagation has always been his job, from his own seed as well as seed exchanged with growers elsewhere.

What Grows on the Site

The plant pages are grouped by plant group: orchids, gentians, campanulas and primulas each have their own section, alongside “Hexenbesen” (the congested broom-like shoots known in English as witches’ brooms) and “Die Tröge” (planting in stone troughs). The site’s keyword list names a good part of the genera grown: Pulsatilla, Saxifraga, Daphne, Lewisia, Dionysia, Leontopodium, Dianthus, Crocus, Iris, Viola and Cyclamen. Troughs are the classic container for alpine plants, and they are also the most heavily photographed part of the collection. The lists on the site cover only part of it: a local newspaper report in 2022 put the garden at more than eight hundred different species.

The Zwickau Rock Garden Society

Both of them belong to the Zwickauer Steingartenverein, the rock garden society in nearby Zwickau. The society was founded on 20 June 1979 under the name “Gebirgspflanzen” as a working group of the East German Cultural Association, with ten members at the start. In the summer of 1980 it adopted the tufted horned rampion (Physoplexis comosa) as its emblem, held its first public plant sale in 1982, and was formally registered as a society in 1990. By 2022 it counted 32 members. Meetings run from October to April on the second Wednesday of the month in a country inn in Zwickau, summer is reserved for visits to botanical gardens and garden shows, and the society’s large plant fair is where members sell or swap plants they have raised themselves. The society’s own website keeps a photo gallery of the Lohr garden and notes that it can be visited by arrangement.

Beyond the Garden

The site also carries a set of travel reports: England in 2016, Farchant in 2015, the Moselle valley in 2014 and the Zillertal in 2013, plus Easter in Dresden, the glacial boulder park at Nochten and a nursery in Děčín, Czechia. The remaining sections are watercolours, music, the couple’s own photography and a book list. The whole site runs on IONOS website builder, was last updated on 29 July 2025 and is copyrighted to Susanne Lohr.

For the wider alpine-garden scene in Saxony, the Zwickauer Steingartenverein publishes seed lists, meeting dates and reports from its members’ gardens.
