Nursery Origins and Four Generations

Staudengärtnerei Peters was founded in 1924 by Walter Peters in Schleswig-Holstein, just outside Hamburg in northern Germany. The original business grew cut roses, vegetable seedlings and cut gladioli, shipped by rail to the Hamburg wholesale market. His son Walter Peters junior took over after World War II, opened a florist shop in 1963, and at one point ran twenty hectares of Gypsophila cut flower production. Walter Jürgen Peters inherited the nursery in 1975 after his father’s stroke; from 1985 the two generations split the plant range, with the father focusing on Helleborus and aquatic plants while Jürgen specialised in alpines and hepaticas sold at weekend plant fairs. The fourth generation, Susanne Peters, has run the nursery solo since 2013.

Core Plant Ranges and Cultivar Series

The nursery’s main plant groups follow four lines. The first is Helleborus, covering Christmas roses (Christrose), snow roses (Schneerose) and Lenten roses (Lenzrose); the nursery is part of the producer network behind the Helleborus Gold Collection® series. The second is Hepatica, especially Japanese hepaticas (Leberblümchen), a private collector line that has been built up over decades. The third is Campanula, the genus behind the nursery’s self-description as a blue-flowered nursery. The fourth covers Viola, Gentiana and other alpines including Edelweiss, suited to rock garden plantings.

Climate Advantage and Alpine Propagation

The nursery sits in southern Schleswig-Holstein in the greater Hamburg area, where the maritime climate is even and the humidity is high enough to grow sensitive alpine plants such as gentians (Enzian) and edelweiss (Edelweiß). Most plants are propagated on site, from seed sowing and cuttings through to potting, with little reliance on bought-in young plants. Although the cultivated footprint has shrunk compared with its mid-century peak, almost all the historical ranges survive, including the aquatic plant line developed in the second generation and the smaller auricula (Aurikel) assortment.

Sales Channels and Public Engagement

Three sales channels carry the nursery today. The first is the calendar of weekend plant fairs (Pflanzenmärkte) across northern Germany, where the team meets local gardeners directly. The second is mail order (Postversand), set up as a service for distant customers and integrated into the main shop. The third is private on-site visits, which require an appointment by phone or email because the nursery keeps no fixed opening hours, given that most of the year is spent at fairs and in propagation. The nursery also gives talks (Vorträge) to garden clubs and similar groups, covering hepaticas, campanulas, shade perennials and related subjects.

Partner Network and Media Appearances

The Helleborus Gold Collection® series is run by Heuger Gartenbaubetriebe in Glandorf, Lower Saxony, of which the Peters nursery is a propagation and sales partner; details are published on the Helleborus Gold Collection® standalone site. Once or twice a year the nursery is invited onto the MDR Garten television show to talk about seasonal plants, and the clips are republished on the nursery’s own YouTube channel. The main website also hosts a dedicated Hepatica page introducing Leberblümchen varieties and cultivation notes.
