A landscape planning office in Amstetten

Winkler Landschaftsplanung is based in Amstetten, in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria, and run by the landscape planner Christian Winkler. The office trades under a single sign combining the two disciplines, “büro winkler landschaftsplanung – und architektur”. The banner on the home page is a photograph taken at the Schlosspark in Bad Vöslau, where tulips fill the foreground and a young woman leads a horse past a rider on horseback. The slogan, “unsere Ideen blühen”, means our ideas blossom, and the banner shows exactly that.

The projects page states the scope plainly: private and public open space, including gardens, parks, squares, residential areas and village squares. The chain of work runs from the initial design through detailed planning and site supervision to running the project through to completion, alongside usage-oriented open space concepts and ecological accompanying planning, the kind of work that has to move in step with environmental approvals.

How the project list is organised

The reference list is sorted by subject, and the categories show where the practice earns its living: tourism and leisure facilities, playgrounds and camping sites; care plans for historic park installations; public, semi-public and commercial open spaces; square design; private gardens under the “nö schön erhalten, schöner gestalten” banner of nature in the garden; private gardens, courtyards and roof greening; ecologically oriented consulting; quarry and recultivation planning, and accompanying planning for landfill sites; consulting and planning for wetlands and plant-based sewage treatment; the shaping and approval of landscape lakes and ponds; road reconstruction and river engineering; village renewal; new golf courses; competitions; and art and cultural events.

Two projects from the gallery

Two pictures from the gallery make the point. One is the Eisenstraßengarten at the Landesgartenschau in Tulln, where a rust-coloured weathering steel portal and gravel surfaces sit against tufts of ornamental grass, with the exhibition signage behind. The other is the wetland biotope at Spitalswald in Amstetten, where a timber railing looks out over a pond covered in duckweed with a duck swimming in it. Both carry the practice’s own watermark in the lower corner.

Recent work and press coverage

The aktuelles section on the home page carries a few recent jobs: a redesigned entrance area for the Forster company, the (t)raumfähige Erika facility in Klein-Pöchlarn, the renewed show garden at the Garten Tulln, perennial mixed planting in Bad Vöslau, and the waiting area at the bus stop in Waldhausen in the Strudengau. On the press side, NÖN reported in August 2018 on the Rollfähhe “Erika” moored in a park, its Tulln edition covered “Erkenntnis im Garten” on 30 May 2018, Der Ybbstaler described the “Garten der Erkenntnis” made for the hundredth anniversary of the republic in issue 23 of 2018, and Tips wrote about the climbing cow Liese in issue 39 of 2016. The home page also carries a line saying the practice has been awarded.

The team and ferroARTE

The staff page lists just two people, Elisabeth Lehner and Gabriele Brandl-Amon, both with the DI title in front of their names. The office also runs ferroARTE together with the Burgruine Reinsberg association, a culture and art initiative started in 1995 on the Reinsberg castle ruin. Following the Eisenstraße association’s lead, artists were invited to work with the landscape, the culture and the materials of the region, and the works that have come out of it include Burgschalk Reinsberg and Sclavinia, between Hochschlag and Reinsberg.
