A Family-Style Botanical Garden in Norfolk County, Southwestern Ontario
Whistling Gardens sits in Norfolk County in southwestern Ontario, established by owner Darren Heimbecker on the family farm beginning around 2012. The site now spans about 22 acres and displays over 4,500 different plants, blending a working nursery, public botanical garden and seasonal visitor experience. Plantings cover trees, shrubs, conifers, perennials and aquatic species, with something of interest from spring woodies through fall colour and fruit.
The Largest Public Peony and Conifer Collections in North America
Two plant collections sit at the heart of the garden. The peony field holds roughly 1,200 cultivars and nearly 3,000 peony plants, ranging from singles through semi-doubles, doubles and Itoh hybrids; bloom runs from about May 15 through late June, and it is promoted as the largest public peony collection in North America. The conifer collection shows about 1,800 conifer taxa across pine, fir, spruce, cypress and larch, presenting year-round variation in colour, texture and form. Roughly 8,000 perennials round out the perennial borders, while Royal Mute Swans, Egyptian Geese and heritage chicken breeds roam the grounds.
Canada’s First Computer-Controlled Fountain Theatre and Seasonal Music Shows
The fountain theatre takes its cues from André Le Nôtre’s 1634 water theatre at Versailles, with three 90-foot staircase basins and over 100 water jets. In the fall of 2020 the garden became one of the first Canadian sites to install fully computer-controlled fountain pumps, replacing much of the traditional piping and valve work with digital sequencing. Darren Heimbecker composes, edits and masters the music for each show from his home studio. Daytime fountain shows run from mid-May through mid-September; the evening Festival of Fountains activates the full staircase, stage and pool fountains.
Garden Experiences, Horticultural Education and Venue Rentals
Whistling Gardens partners with local organizations to offer hands-on experiences. The Donn Zver School of Pottery stages twelve clay garden sculptures around the grounds each June through October. Glamp & Garden Getaway packages pair an overnight stay at Homegrown Hideaway with garden admission and a dedicated fountain show. The garden also hosts weddings, anniversaries and corporate gatherings on a 4-kilometre trail network, with a certified events team, weather tent backup and accessibility valet service. Year-round workshops cover horticultural therapy, garden photography, floral design, garden art exhibits and family programming.
Visitor Amenities, Plant Catalogue and Seasonal Opening
Daytime admission includes the fountain shows; opening hours run from mid-May to mid-October and shift with the season. The site includes a gift shop, a plant retail centre and a light food and drink area. Each year Whistling Gardens Limited releases a new plant catalogue in PDF format covering peonies, rare perennials and a small selection of winter-hardy cacti, with a 25% deposit to hold plants through spring. The garden sits between Norfolk’s wineries and orchards, within roughly a one to two hour drive of Toronto, Pearson International Airport and the Niagara Falls border crossings, making it a practical family stop on a southwestern Ontario itinerary.
