Cottage Lake Gardens

About and History

Cottage Lake Gardens (cottagelakegardens.com) is a private botanical garden, plant nursery and bed-and-breakfast nestled on the east shore of Cottage Lake in Woodinville, Washington, about 32 km northeast of Seattle. The two-acre property was developed gradually over twenty years by the resident owners, who rebuilt a wooded lakeside lot into a layered landscape of lakeside viewing areas, shade trails, a propagation greenhouse and a trillium-focused display garden, and the property is now open to garden clubs, plant enthusiasts and international visitors by reservation alongside its small on-site nursery and B&B. The owners’ earlier careers in law and biotechnology shaped the garden’s working infrastructure, from the automated drip-irrigation system to the propagation glasshouse, and the resulting destination has become a fixture of the Pacific Northwest’s trillium and woodland-plant community.

Garden Design and Trillium Collection

The garden is laid out in four zones — a lakeside viewing border, a shaded woodland walk, a propagation greenhouse and a dedicated trillium display — and is designed around Pacific Northwest shade-tolerant species and West Coast native plants. Its signature Trillium Trail brings together more than fifty of the world’s known Trillium species, making the garden one of the very few places on earth where the genus can be studied in a single location. The owners are currently building a National Trillium Collection devoted to studying, conserving, growing and propagating this group of rare and endangered spring ephemerals, with surplus propagated material offered to the public through the on-site nursery and online shop.

Public Tours and Garden Talks

Each spring between April and May, the garden hosts a limited number of Trillium Tea, Talk & Tours, an indoor tea on vintage trillium china followed by a slide lecture and a guided walk along the Trillium Trail; each event is capped at twenty guests and is typically booked a year in advance. Beyond the seasonal teas, the owners deliver more than ten travelling garden talks to local clubs, the Northwest Perennial Alliance, the Washington Park Arboretum, the King County Library system, the Northwest Flower & Garden Show and international rock-garden conferences, and the cumulative audience across talks and teas has passed 4,500 visitors.

Nursery and Plant Sales

The on-site nursery and glasshouse specialise in trilliums, native woodland plants and unusual hardy perennials raised from seed by the owners, and stock is released through a dedicated e-commerce website on a first-come basis, with dormant-season bare-root shipping offered to keep freight costs down. Orders ship year-round within the United States whenever weather permits, with shipping calculated automatically by weight, packing size and destination; the nursery itself is open to the public only during the spring Trillium Tours, and off-season visits are arranged by appointment for plant collection.

Education and Volunteer Program

Since 2012 the garden has run the Gardening Angels volunteer program, in which helpers learn plant identification, database labelling, bed design, propagation by cuttings and division, and seed sowing under the owners’ guidance, with sessions on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from February through October. The owners also offer paid on-site garden consultations covering layout, plant selection, identification, pruning, pest and disease diagnosis, and referrals to landscape contractors, and they continue to speak at local clubs, libraries and the Seattle Public Utilities as part of the Great Garden Speakers directory.
