PeonyNursery.com is a family-owned peony and herbaceous peony nursery located near the city of Panevezys in northern Lithuania. Founded in the post-Soviet era by a family that had previously grown tulips for the local market, the nursery transitioned to bare-root peony propagation after Dutch plantsmen recruited Lithuanian growers as additional rootstock suppliers for the worldwide peony flower market. The nursery specialises in lactiflora herbaceous peonies, Tree Peonies, and selected Eastern species peonies sourced from Siberia to the Caucasus, and has more recently expanded into Siberian iris and double hepaticas. Bare-root peonies are shipped internationally between mid-July and late May, with DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms to the United States and CFIA-compliant phytosanitary certification to Canada. The registered domain is peonynursery.com.

Family Origins and Pivot

The nursery sits near Panevezys in northern Lithuania and was started by a family that grew cut tulips for the local Lithuanian market during the Soviet period. After Lithuanian borders reopened in the early 1990s, Dutch plantsmen entered the country looking for additional rootstock suppliers and approached the family, gradually drawing them into the production of bare-root peonies. Over nearly three decades of continuous propagation, the nursery has built up substantial collections of lactiflora herbaceous peonies and 5- to 7-year-old Tree Peonies, and has begun crossbreeding tree peonies with the goal of releasing new combinations in the coming years. The same family continues to handle key cultivation, lifting, grading, and packing operations directly, and replies to variety enquiries in English, Russian, and Lithuanian with a turnaround typically shorter than that of large-scale commercial nurseries.

Product Range and Native-Species Focus

The catalogue divides into three groups. The first is the established horticultural cultivar range of lactiflora and Tree Peonies, including commercial varieties such as Abracadabra, Albert Crousse, Alexander Woollcott, Alexandre Dumas, Amber Kiss, Antey, Antwerpen, Aria, Armani, Aura, Avalanche, and Belyj Parus, plus the nursery’s own seedling selections. The second is a set of native Eastern peony species collected from Siberia to the Caucasus, grown on as 5-year-old mature plants and offered in red, white, and pink colour breaks; these are recommended for landscape plantings because of their developed root systems and vigorous habit. The third is a smaller selection of Siberian iris and double hepaticas, used to fill the late-spring to early-summer flowering window. Tree Peony hybridisation has continued for several years, and several crosses are expected to be formally introduced in the near future.

International Sales and Cold-Chain Shipping

Sales are organised around two international shipping windows each year, for autumn and the following spring, with a 58-euro minimum retail order and wholesale pricing available on application. The nursery communicates in English, Lithuanian, Russian, and several other languages, accepts bank transfer and standard online payment methods, and confirms orders by email. Bare-root peonies are lifted and dispatched from mid-July through late May; roots can be planted whenever the ground is not frozen, or stored in a cool place for several months if it is. Orders to the United States are shipped on DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms so that buyers do not face additional customs procedures. For orders of twelve or fewer roots, no import permit is required and the nursery supplies a phytosanitary certificate; for larger orders the buyer files USDA PPQ 587 and the nursery provides the matching certificate. Canadian customers obtain a Plant Protection Import Permit through the CFIA My CFIA portal, again with the nursery’s phytosanitary certificate. Two-day courier delivery to Poland, Finland, and the other Baltic states is offered at modest cost.

Native-Species Stewardship and Variety Continuity

The nursery places long-term emphasis on sourcing and propagating native peony species from the Caucasus through Siberia, on the view that these genotypes are undervalued in mainstream peony commerce and deserve wider planting in cool-temperate gardens. As a result, an increasing share of the production area is dedicated to species and near-species material, with 5-year-old mature plants offered to landscape designers and serious hobby gardeners. In parallel, the Tree Peony breeding programme continues to combine established tree peony lines in the hope of producing combinations suited to continental European conditions, with better disease tolerance and bloom times that complement the existing commercial range. Naming, propagation records, and breeding pedigrees for all native selections and home-bred lines are maintained by hand and shared with customers on request.
