Nursery History and Founder
Bonsai Plaza was founded in 1997 by Maarten van der Hoeven in Boskoop, a nursery town in South Holland, the Netherlands; the site has remained in the Boskoop nursery district ever since. As a teenager, Maarten received his first instruction from the Dutch bonsai teacher Ernst Mollet. He later travelled to Japan and spent long stretches at Taishoen Bonsai Garden near Tokyo, where he apprenticed under Oyakata Nobuichi Urushibata and worked with several other Japanese masters. After returning to Europe, he set out to build a platform that would bring the full spectrum of authentic Japanese outdoor bonsai and their care to European collectors, combining a working nursery with a dedicated webshop.
Physical Nursery and Webshop
The nursery itself sits in the Boskoop nursery district in South Holland. It is open from 09:00 to 17:00 on most weekdays, runs by appointment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and is closed on Fridays through Sundays. The companion webshop carries imported Japanese outdoor bonsai, handmade pots, soils, professional tools, copper and aluminium wire, fertilizers, books and presentation accessories, with shipping covering most of Europe. Customers include individual enthusiasts as well as retail and wholesale partners across the continent.
Product Catalogue
Trees span conifers (Juniper, Pinus, Taxus etc.), flowering deciduous species (Azalea, Prunus, Potentilla), non-flowering deciduous trees (Acer, Carpinus, Ulmacea), fruit-bearing deciduous bonsai (Chaenomeles, Pyracantha, Malus, Pourthiaea) and garden trees, sorted into five height classes: Mame, Shohin, Chuhin, Kifu Sho and Dai. Pots focus on Japanese handmade work, including studios and kilns such as Yozan, Hattori, Kosen, Reihou, Heian and others, again in five size classes. Soils cover seven media: Akadama, Kanuma, Kiryu, Keto, Pumice, Lava rock and Suiseki sand, complemented by copper and aluminium wire, pliers, scissors, copper wire, fertilizers and wound care.
Courses and Exhibitions
The Advanced Bonsai Course is led by instructor Edwin Koppers, who has been active in bonsai for about thirty years and trained with Marco Invernizzi, Teunis-Jan Klein, Marc Noelanders and Carlos van der Vaart. Classes run on Wednesday evenings from 19:30 to 22:00 at the Boskoop nursery, with a maximum of six participants. The 2026 calendar opens with the Azalea Weekend on 30-31 May, when Boskoop welcomes visitors during the satsuki bloom. One Bonsai Plaza tree has been selected for the 100th Kokufu-ten in Tokyo in February 2026, and the platform also takes part in The Trophy in Genk, Belgium, during the same period.
Team, Acquisition and Holdings
Jacqueline van der Hoeven co-runs the business. Long-time collaborator Bob van Ruitenbeek, who also studied under Nobuichi Urushibata in Japan, has served as chair of the Bonsai Association Midden Nederland and later of the Dutch Bonsai Association. On 20 June 2025, Bonsai Plaza B.V. reached an agreement with Deshima Bonsai to take over that nursery’s entire collection, pots and inventory, after the passing of Deshima’s founder Teunis Jan Klein. The transfer places the late master’s trees, pots and tools in experienced hands and adds meaningful depth to the platform’s Japanese holdings.
