About Rose Cottage Plants
Rose Cottage Plants is a mail-order bulb and dahlia nursery in Essex run by Anne and Jack Barnard. Its own summary of the business is that bulbs supply an extra layer of interest and colour to a border in every month of the year, from the earliest snowdrop to the dahlias of high summer, and that it offers top-sized bulbs from the best growers at prices that come as a surprise. The homepage describes it as the UK’s foremost dahlia collection, selling dahlias, tulips, alliums, narcissus and other hardy bulbs by post.
The Royal Horticultural Society’s nursery directory records the speciality as hardy bulbs, dahlias and a select range of hardy perennials, with mail order for dahlia tubers and hardy bulbs and delivery to shows. There is no minimum order within the UK; the EU minimum is twenty. The nursery also appears on the RHS recommended list.
It Started With a Garden
The business grew out of a garden. Anne and Jack designed, built and planted their own modest 120 foot by 35 foot plot at Rose Cottage in Theydon Bois, Essex, and opened it under the National Gardens Scheme in 1996. It drew an unexpectedly large number of visitors, was photographed and featured in magazines, and eventually gave its name to Rose Cottage Plants.
The turning point came from a shortage. Unable to buy the plants they wanted to grow, they grew them themselves — and always had a surplus. Visitors liked what was being grown, the surplus found homes, and sharing it with a wider audience turned into a business. A passion for bulbs led them to new sources, and those finds were passed on to the gardeners who by then were searching them out.
The garden soon outgrew itself, and the nursery moved a few miles to Bay Tree Farm, acquiring acres to grow in but no garden — just a compacted farmyard to dig out. Twenty-five years on the garden there is still a work in progress, because the mail-order business, growing for the nursery and showing all take precedence. Anne is a noted dahlia grower and exhibitor.
What They Sell
The shop splits into dahlias and summer flowering bulbs, spring flowering bulbs, late autumn and winter flowering bulbs, and gift vouchers. Feature lines cover iris from the earliest reticulates to Dutch hybrids, a narcissus selection of hard-to-source varieties, alliums from dainty front-of-border types to giants on stout stems, and a ranunculus collection that now includes more of the ‘Amandine’ series.
Dahlias are the main line, carrying both established names and new or exclusive introductions, with a fresh catalogue each spring. Dahlia tubers are dispatched from late October, while tulip-only orders are held back until late October so bulbs arrive close to their recommended planting time. Single plants shown on the site include tulip ‘Mariette’ from £5.00 and muscari ‘Pink Sunrise’ from £5.50. The nursery holds RHS medals from 2007, 2008 and 2011.
Ordering and Delivery
Mail order is the main channel. UK mainland postage is £4.95 including VAT, with surcharges for the Scottish Highlands and Islands, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Orders into the EU are currently suspended: plant material needs a phytosanitary certificate costing upwards of £50 per consignment, and couriers are not taking plant material into European countries at present.
The delivery page is unusually specific about how charges work. Classifications for parts of Scotland were revised by the courier and the rates had to go up; where packaging is weighed and Royal Mail would in fact be cheaper, the nursery says it will say so before taking payment. Orders can also be placed on pay-by-phone and discussed afterwards.
Visiting and Talks
The nursery gate is usually shut — it is open by appointment and for specific events, though pre-paid orders can be collected by arrangement. The Dahlia Open Days are the exception, when the whole collection can be seen and plants bought on the spot. Otherwise the team is out at shows and plant fairs, with the 2026 diary running through to September. In the quieter months from late October to January they also give talks to gardening clubs on spring bulbs and dahlias, covering growing technique and how to choose varieties.
The nursery is at Epping Green in Essex — not the Hertfordshire one of the same name — between Epping and Harlow, within ten minutes of both the M25 junction 26 and the M11 junction 7. Signs only go up when they are open, so a phone call first saves a wasted trip.
