About the Association

The Bonsai Club Deutschland e.V. (BCD) was founded on 27 May 1978 and is the longest-standing national bonsai enthusiasts’ association in Germany, registered at the Vereinsregister of the Amtsgericht Mannheim under registration number VR 331040. The current bylaws were adopted by the general membership meeting on 29 October 2017. The association serves about 2,500 members and is dedicated to promoting the art of bonsai and allied arts in Germany.

The statutory seat is in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, while the executive office is run from Duisburg by the Vice President and the secretariat operates from the President’s hometown of Bad Orb. The membership magazine BONSAI has been published since 1982 and was redesigned in 2012. The official site carries club news, exhibition announcements, an online forum and tutorial videos.

Bylaws and Governance

BCD is a registered, tax-exempt association under German law. Its bylaws define eight purposes: spreading knowledge of bonsai, supporting member exchange at home and abroad, training young enthusiasts, maintaining ties with friendly organisations, publishing specialist literature, organising further-education events, documenting the art of bonsai, and codifying craft principles for the practice.

The board consists of a President, a Vice President who doubles as Managing Director, a Treasurer who also handles international liaison, and a Digital Communications Officer. The President represents BCD publicly, chairs board and member meetings, and is currently Stefan Smolinka. In the event of dissolution, the statutes require the residual assets to be distributed equally to two regional bonsai associations of recognised charitable status.

Magazine and National Exhibitions

Members receive four issues of BONSAI each year, covering club news, exhibition coverage, international event reports and articles on shaping and Suiseki. Issue 186 (June 2025) reviewed the federal assembly held in Chemnitz, Saxony, and the change of leadership at the head of BCD, along with a series of national and international exhibition reports. The association’s online forum and tutorial videos extend the magazine’s reach.

BCD holds the annual national exhibition BCD Ausstellung and the Deutscher Bonsai Preis competition, complemented by regional shows and youth talent events. Recent editions took place in Bad Orb (2024) and Salach (2026). Online training sessions led by senior teachers are open to members, with recent topics including juniper foliage care and yew as bonsai.

Membership Services and Training

Members enjoy four issues of BONSAI per year, access to the club forum, free day-seminars and workshops, entry and participation rights at federal and regional exhibitions, and eligibility for national and international talent contests. Membership runs on a calendar-year cycle, with a three-month notice period ending 30 September. Dues are paid annually in advance by direct debit, with overseas members covering postage differences.

BCD organises both online and in-person training courses throughout the year. Sessions cover species-specific care, pruning and styling, soil and feeding, and seasonal calendars, alongside specialised topics such as juniper foliage refinement. Sessions are reserved through the secretariat and allocated on a first-come basis, with a per-session cap of around 300 members.

International Outreach and Bonsai Promotion

BCD maintains working relations with bonsai organisations across Europe and overseas, sending delegations to major events and hosting visiting groups in turn. The Treasurer coordinates international liaison, while the Digital Communications Officer ensures that club news and event coverage reach the German-speaking audience on social platforms.

Following bylaws §2, the association uses bonsai as a bridge for cultural understanding at international level, hosting visiting delegations, organising study tours for German enthusiasts, supporting young talent through mentor programmes, and continuing to operate as a registered non-profit club into its fifth decade. Members and the public can follow BCD via its official site, social media, magazine and forum.
