About Goscote Nurseries
Goscote Nurseries is a family-run nursery at Cossington in Leicestershire, trading since 1965. Its own description is simple: it grows and sources plants from all corners of the world, with trees and shrubs as the main business, a good share of them rare or unusual, and one of the larger selections of hardy plants in the Midlands.
Location and Visiting
The nursery sits at Cossington, off the A6 between Leicester and Loughborough. Parking is free on site, the nursery and the cafe are reached at ground level, and wheelchairs can get in. It opens seven days a week and closes for around a fortnight over the Christmas period. Staff are on hand to answer questions, and there is a show garden to walk round.
What They Grow
The core of the nursery is hardy plants, with an emphasis on the less usual ones. Japanese maples, rhododendrons and azaleas, magnolias, camellias, Pieris and other ericaceae come first, followed by ornamental trees and shrubs, conifers, fruit, heathers, alpines, roses, clematis and some uncommon climbers.
On the shop floor the range is roughly nine lines: ornamental and shade trees, evergreen and flowering shrubs, roses, climbers and patio plants, perennials for borders and cottage planting, fruit trees and soft fruit, houseplants, alpines and clematis, and seasonal bedding. Stock changes through the year, so the pictures on the site are seasonal samples rather than a live list.
Gardening Supplies and Structures
Plants are only part of the shop. Composts are sorted by use, including multipurpose, peat-free and ericaceous mixes, plus decorative bark and horticultural grit; alongside them sit horticultural grit, gravel and ornamental stone. Pots range from outdoor planters to covers for houseplants, with steel obelisks, arches and plant supports. Tools come from Darlac, Niwaki and Kent & Stowe, covering secateurs, loppers, trowels and spades. Bird food, feeders, nest boxes and bug hotels fill the wall, with loose seed sold by the litre.
Greenhouses, sheds and summer houses are displayed on site as well, so sizes and specifications can be checked on the spot before ordering.
Tea Garden Cafe and the BARK Dog Range
The Tea Garden cafe has been part of the nursery for years, serving breakfasts, sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, pot of tea and freshly baked cakes, with a log burner for cold days. Part of the seating is outdoors in the garden, and dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas and in the designated indoor part of the cafe. Vegetarian and allergy requirements can be catered for.
A newer section called BARK stocks dog treats, toys and accessories from brands including BEKO, Green & Wilds, George Barclay and Fell Dog. The nursery now packs plants, coffee and dog supplies into a single visit.
