Historical Evolution

The College of Architecture and Landscape at Peking University (CALA) traces its academic lineage back to 1902, when architecture was already listed in the Imperial University of Peking’s Charter. The land’s architecture department was set up at Beiping University’s School of Engineering in 1928, merged into Peking University in 1947, and transferred to Tsinghua University during the 1952 nationwide restructuring of departments. Professor Kongjian Yu returned to China in 1997 and founded the Center for Landscape Planning and Design, followed by the Architecture Center in 2000 and the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture in 2003. In May 2010, Peking University decided to formally merge architecture and landscape architecture into a single college, and Kongjian Yu was appointed founding dean.

Academic Disciplines and Degree Programs

The college is built around an interdisciplinary, multi-scalar approach to design of human settlements under the framework of ecological civilization. Its core disciplines include landscape architecture, architecture, and the related urban-rural planning fields. The college has run successive master’s programs in Geography (Landscape Architecture) from 2005 to 2025, the professional Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) since 2006 and the full-time FMLA track independently by the college since 2013, and the PhD program in Human Geography since 2000. From 2026 onwards, the annual intake is 22 full-time and 20 part-time MLA students, with teaching covering territorial planning, urban design, ecological restoration and ecological engineering.

Faculty and Key Research Platforms

The college has 15 full-time faculty, including one dual-appointed academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Chang Jiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, and several recipients of national talent programmes. By 2022 it had produced 1018 master’s graduates and 42 doctoral graduates. Key research platforms include the MWR Key Laboratory of Water Ecological Conservation and Water Heritage (completed in 2025), the Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Local Built Environments, the Engineering Technology Innovation Center of MNR for Cultural Heritage Conservation and Renewal in Territorial Spaces, and the PKU NbS Global Innovation Center. Faculty also serve on bodies such as the Climate Change Working Committee of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture and the Landscape and Beautiful China Construction Committee of the Chinese Urban Research Association.

Academic Journal and Signature Theories

The college publishes Landscape Architecture Frontiers (Chinese-English, ISSN 2096-336X, CN 10-1467/TU) jointly with Higher Education Press, founded in 2013 with Kongjian Yu as founding editor-in-chief. The journal is indexed in Scopus, the Web of Science ESCI (2024 JIF 0.9, Q1 in Architecture), the Chinese Science Citation Database and other major databases, and has received the ASLA Award for Communications. The college’s signature theoretical framework comprises Ecological Infrastructure, landscape security pattern theory, the “negative planning” or “reverse planning” approach, Big Foot Aesthetics and the Sponge Cities concept, all of which have informed China’s major functional zoning planning and territorial spatial planning at the national and city levels.

International Engagement and Recent Developments

The college maintains long-term partnerships with universities in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. Kongjian Yu served as visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 2010 to 2014 and is among the earliest proponents of the Sponge Cities concept in China. His international recognitions include the 2020 Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award from the International Federation of Landscape Architects and the 2023 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander Prize, and he was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Following the loss of Professor Yu in September 2025 in Brazil, the college continues its academic direction through its existing faculty and platforms, including the recently completed MWR Key Laboratory and the ongoing Landscape Architecture Frontiers journal.
