History and Ownership
Mill Race Garden Centre began as Mill Race Nursery in the late 1970s and was expanded into a full garden centre in September 2004 when the Swallow Aquatics family group acquired it. The centre is currently operated by the same Swallow Aquatics family team and sits within a wider regional group of home and pet businesses.
Location and Local Market
The garden centre’s core location is in Colchester, Essex, in south-east England, and is widely cited as one of the largest garden centres in the area. Colchester is surrounded by several smaller towns such as Chelmsford, Ipswich and Clacton-on-Sea, which makes Mill Race a routine destination for casual gardeners across central Essex.
Product Range and Brands
The garden centre’s range covers four main streams: live plants (bedding, perennials, shrubs and seasonal plants), garden tools and maintenance (Hozelock watering and pruning), outdoor living (Char-Broil, Kamado and Napoleon barbecues; Kettler and Katie Blake outdoor furniture) and indoor and seasonal decoration (Gibsons jigsaws, Lemax, Hornby, Department 56 and Vivid Arts collectibles). The combined catalogue is typical of UK multi-line family garden centres.
Store, Online and Local Logistics
The Colchester shop remains the centre’s flagship, complemented by a UK-wide webshop for tools, furniture, decoration and a limited pre-order programme for live plants. Local orders in the Colchester and wider Essex area are typically delivered by the centre’s own vehicles, with national carriers used for longer-distance deliveries. The website carries current opening hours, gift card information and contact details for group visits and school trips.
Family Group and Local Position
The garden centre is part of the Swallow Aquatics family group, which also runs aquatic and pet businesses in the Colchester area. This shared ownership gives Mill Race a stable supply chain and a recognisable brand across the regional home and garden sector. The garden centre is regularly cited in Essex lifestyle and family-activity media, and is a routine stop for families and casual gardeners across central Essex.
