花园中有一座大型乡村风格池塘(country-style pond),周围散布着大量陶瓷花园地精(Garden Gnomes),园主自嘲”dare I mention it”地承认”a rather a lot of garden gnomes in residence”——按园主自己的记录,池塘周边路径上至少有八十余只地精常年”驻守”。
Head Gardener
About Us / Welcome to my Garden”页自称”a compulsive gardener and chronicler(强迫症园丁兼记录者)”,是网站唯一的撰稿人、维护者与园丁。 Moosey’s Country Garden 自1996年上线,按网站记录”proper gardening journals started in 1997, a time when the word ‘blog’ wasn’t even invented”——可见它属于新西兰最早一批园艺博客,比”blog”一词的普及更早。园主明确表示,网站”mirrors my real garden, and embraces its philosophy of sharing and celebrating the universal love of gardening”,并总结花园是”a home grown labour of love”。
植物收藏覆盖:玫瑰(”Over 200 roses in the Rose Garden”)、多年生植物、Camellia 山茶、杜鹃、Choisya、Delphinium 飞燕草、Peony 牡丹、Cordyline(Cabbage Tree)朱蕉、Forget-me-nots 勿忘我、Ligularia 橐吾、Honesty 缎花,以及众多新西兰本土植物(Hebes 拟婆婆纳、Astelia、Phormium、Cordyline、Totara 等)。园中常通过”recycled roses”——从其他园地回收或受赠的玫瑰——来扩充品种,自称”rescued or given to me”。花园日志中还多次出现”herd of four cats and two black and white Border Collies”——目前园中常住四只猫(其中两只被合称为”the Fred cats”,另有叫 Buster、Speckles(被救助的流浪猫)和 Minimus(已认作 Pond Cottage 驻园猫的小猫))以及两只黑白边境牧羊犬(含名为 Pebbles 的一只)。

Garden Overview
Moosey’s Country Garden is a long-running private country garden and personal gardening blog located in the Christchurch area of New Zealand, maintained for more than two decades by its sole gardener, who styles herself the “Head Gardener.” Spanning more than three acres (~1.2 ha) and followed online since 1996, the site documents the garden’s seasonal changes, plant collections and the creator’s South Island travels, and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s earliest personal gardening blogs.Moosey’s Country Garden covers more than three acres and is described by its owner as “the never-ending story.” The planting is informal and natural with few straight lines, combining roses, ornamental grasses, perennials, bulbs and large numbers of New Zealand native evergreens across woodland, lawns, shrubberies, flower borders and water features. The gardener calls herself “a long-lived, frost-hardy, perennial Head Gardener” while admitting “actually, the only gardener.” A large country-style pond is one of the focal points; the owner confesses, with mock embarrassment, that it has “a rather a lot of garden gnomes in residence” — her own journals record more than eighty gnomes dotted around the pond path. A man-made water race (irrigation canal) flows through the property, crossed by several small bridges including Willow Bridge, Middle Bridge and Car Bridge.
Head Gardener and Philosophy
The website’s creator describes herself as “a compulsive gardener and chronicler” and is the sole writer, webmaster and gardener. Her partner is affectionately referred to throughout the journals as the “Non-Gardening Partner.” Moosey’s Country Garden has been online since 1996, and according to the site the proper gardening journals began in 1997, “a time when the word ‘blog’ wasn’t even invented” — making it one of New Zealand’s earliest gardening weblogs, predating the popular use of the term “blog.” The owner states explicitly that the website “mirrors my real garden, and embraces its philosophy of sharing and celebrating the universal love of gardening,” and characterises the garden as “a home grown labour of love.” The “Head Gardener” title, she explains, was first used by others, ignored for months, and then “dug itself in, like a tenacious garden weed” — a self-deprecating badge of honour.
Garden Areas and Plant Collection
The site’s Garden Tour is divided into fourteen named areas: Apple Tree Garden, Dog-Paths, Driveway Garden, Frisbee Lawn, Hazel Orchard, Hen House Garden, House & Garden, Island Border, Jelly Bean Border, Middle Garden, Septic Tank Garden, Pond & Cottage, Wattle Woods, and Willow Tree Garden. The Willow Tree Garden grows around a large willow stump that re-shoots each year, with hostas, rhododendrons, Miscanthus, ferns and primroses planted beneath; the Stables Border features a large variegated elm and a flowering almond underplanted with Phormium, Astelia, ornamental grasses and summer-flowering Lychnis. Plant collections include more than 200 roses, perennials, camellias, rhododendrons, Choisya, delphiniums, peonies, Cordyline (Cabbage Tree), forget-me-nots, Ligularia, Honesty, and a substantial New Zealand native plant palette (hebes, Astelia, Phormium, Cordyline, Totara and others). Rose plantings are often expanded by “recycled roses” — those “rescued or given to me” from other gardens. The garden is also home to four cats — including the pair known as “the Fred cats,” together with Buster, the rescued stray Speckles, and the kitten Minimus (officially the Pond Cottage resident cat) — and two black and white Border Collies, of which Pebbles is one.
Online Journals and South Island Exploration
A dedicated Garden Journal section records the garden’s seasonal progress in chronological order, archived across multiple volumes (garden-journal-24 and earlier), with continuous entries spanning more than twenty-one years. Beyond the garden, the journals document the owner’s walking and plant-hunting trips around the South Island — including Akaroa, the 920 m Mount Herbert (the highest peak on Banks Peninsula), the Port Hills, Cloud Farm, and the volcanic rim of Lyttelton Harbour near Christchurch — recording native plants such as hebes, astelias, flaxes (Phormium), totara and silver beech. The site is supported by a large image gallery, an active forum at forums.mooseyscountrygarden.com, a Twitter account (@mooseysgarden) and a YouTube channel, together forming a personal gardening archive of New Zealand flora and practice stretching back more than a quarter of a century.
