Australasian Native Orchid Society Inc.

The Orchadian

《The Orchidian》(The Orchadian)

(ANOS Groups)

The Australasian Native Orchid Society Inc. (ANOS Inc.) is the major regional organisation promoting the understanding and appreciation of orchid species that grow naturally in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the adjacent western Pacific islands, as well as hybrids bred exclusively from these native species. Its scope spans conservation, research, species and hybrid breeding, culture, shows, displays, judging, photography, learning about the Australian flora and environment, and field excursions. ANOS Inc. itself does not hold monthly meetings, shows or member events; these are organised by its affiliated ANOS Groups around the region, and members join their local group to participate.

Organisation and history

ANOS traces its roots to August 1963, when the quarterly journal The Orchadian was first issued as a hand-printed newsletter. As the membership network expanded across Australian states, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, the society grew into the coordinating body it is today. Membership of ANOS Inc. is conferred through an annual subscription to The Orchadian, aligned to the financial year (July to June), and members hold voting rights at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the board and affiliated groups determine the society’s direction, policy and resource allocation.

The Orchadian journal

The Orchadian is the official quarterly journal of ANOS Inc. Now in its 21st volume (2026), the publication has grown from its hand-printed origins into a 48-page full-colour magazine. It carries articles on culture, species, hybrids, shows and conferences, field excursions, scientific work, orchid history and discovery, conservation, and ANOS awards. Scientific and major taxonomy articles are peer-reviewed by staff of national herbaria or equivalent tertiary institutions. Copy deadlines are 15 February, 15 May, 15 August and 15 November. Members can choose between a digital subscription (online reading plus PDF download) and a printed subscription (postal delivery plus the digital edition); the content is identical across the two formats.

Judging system and awards

ANOS operates a dedicated judging system for Australasian native orchids, governed by the ANOS Judging Handbook (v8.10, September 2018). Regional Judging Panels run in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, with elected Registrars coordinating rosters, panels and image libraries. Three levels of judge accreditation are recognised: Certificated Judge, Associate Judge and Judge. National awards are conferred at the tri-annual ANOS Conference by the National Registrar, and span quality awards (FCC, AM, HCC), cultural (ACC), distinction (AD), botanical excellence (ABE) and recognition (CBR) categories.

Affiliated groups and events

ANOS maintains dozens of affiliated Groups across Australia and New Zealand, each holding monthly meetings, annual shows and field excursions. Active groups include ANOS Central Coast (Narara, NSW), ANOS Far North Coast (Lismore, NSW), ANOS Newcastle, ANOS Macarthur (NSW), ANOS Kabi Group (Brisbane / Gympie region, QLD), NOSTI (Toowoomba, QLD) and groups in Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and New Zealand. The show calendar is anchored by the April-May Bigibbum Show season (Dendrobium bigibbum and related hybrids) and the August Speciosum Show season (Dendrobium speciosum). Several groups also lead conservation projects, including the New South Wales Central Coast habitat survey and development-plan feedback programme.
