History and the Name’s Pedigree

The name GartenFlora first appeared in 1852 as the title of a botanical periodical founded in Erlangen by the German-born horticulturist and botanist Eduard August von Regel (1815—1892). Issued under the full title Monatschrift für deutsche und schweizerische Garten- und Blumenkunde, it was printed by Ferdinand Enke Verlag and supported by the Verein zur Beförderung des Gartenbaues in den Königlich Preussischen Staaten. The journal recorded many newly described plants through the later 19th century. Ludwig Wittmack served as its long-standing editor from 1887, and the journal continued to appear until 1940. Today’s GartenFlora monthly inherits this name and is published by Deutsche Medien-Manufaktur GmbH & Co. KG in Münster-Hiltrup as a practice-oriented gardening magazine.

Editorial Focus and Sections

GartenFlora presents itself as the gardening magazine for gardening, experiencing and enjoying (Das Gartenmagazin fürs Gärtnern, Erleben und Genießen). It publishes seasonal gardening tips, advice on planting and arranging beds and balconies, hands-on DIY guides, and numerous plant portraits. Each issue is organised around a featured theme — recent issues have highlighted welcoming autumn, space-saving grapes on trellis and pergola, and ordering peonies with companion perennials. The print and online editions appear together, and the editorial office sits at Wilhelmsaue 37 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

Digital Reading Channels

GartenFlora offers a digital edition (ePaper) accessible on tablet, smartphone and web browser. The ePaper goes online two days before the printed issue and can be downloaded for offline reading within the iOS and Android apps, where readers may also save favourite articles. Subscribers can use the archive function to revisit issues from 2016 through 2021. The Kombiabo combined subscription delivers both the digital edition and the printed monthly magazine to the home. A public annual index (Jahresinhaltsverzeichnisse) lists every topic, plant and tip published during the year, allowing readers to trace content across all twelve issues.

Editorial Team and Publishing House

The editor-in-chief (Chefredakteurin) of GartenFlora is Dr Natalie Faßmann; Head of Digital is Steffanie Plikat; the Publisher is Frank Gloystein; and distribution (Leitung Vertrieb) is led by Martin Jannke. The publishing house, Deutsche Medien-Manufaktur GmbH & Co. KG, has its registered office in Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia. Subscription sales, advertising and classifieds (Kleinanzeigen) all run through the same company group, while the newsletter is hosted on aktion.gartenflora.de and single-issue or subscription orders are processed through shop.gartenflora.de.

Reader Services and Community

Readers can subscribe to the GartenFlora newsletter for seasonal gardening content and subscriber-only discounts or welcome gifts. The homepage features the current issue’s top themes and a short preview, so prospective readers can browse the editorial direction before subscribing. Beyond the monthly, the magazine maintains a visible presence at German garden shows and around the Deutscher Gartenbuchpreis (German Garden Book Prize), awarded by the Deutsche Gartenbau-Gesellschaft 1822 (DGG). It sits alongside sister titles such as Landlust as one of the most widely read practical gardening magazines in Germany.
