Parkland Nursery and Landscape Services Ltd. (PNLS) is a third-generation, family-owned Canadian company founded by Earl Beck in 1971 on five acres three miles east of Red Deer, Alberta. The company relocated to its current site in October 2003 and has since grown to over 500 acres of production. The firm is now owned and operated by Dwayne Beck, Earl’s son, and operates independently from the retail garden centre (Parkland Nurseries & Garden Centre) run by Earl’s daughter Gloria Beck. Marketed as “Your Green Connection”, PNLS runs three divisions: wholesale nursery production, commercial landscape construction, and commercial maintenance.

Prairie-hardy selection and Clean Plants certification

The nursery division operates as a dryland grower in Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone 2b/3, producing trees, shrubs and perennials that satisfy the Canadian Standards for Nursery Stock 8th Edition (2006). PNLS holds certification under the Clean Plants Nursery Certification Program, formerly the Domestic Phytosanitary Certification Program (DPCP). The nursery partners with the Alberta Hail Suppression Project and runs continuous field trials to expand its selection of climate-suited and aesthetically suitable varieties. In 2013 the company patented Parkland Pillar, a compact, narrowly columnar form of Dakota Pinnacle birch bred for urban planting.

Commercial landscape construction services

The Landscape division is staffed by journeyman landscape gardeners, certified machine operators and landscapers serving commercial, industrial and large residential projects across Central Alberta. Beyond supply and installation of trees, shrubs and perennials, the team delivers landscape design concepts, retaining walls, paving stone installation, seeding and sodding, zeroscaping, a variety of edging, mulching, drainage solutions and rip rap installation. The fleet runs from push mowers to ride-on machines with 6-foot and 12-foot cutting decks, three-point-hitch tractor implements and a tanker truck for watering.

Pruning and licensed applicator maintenance

The Maintenance division is led by a journeyman landscaper with more than 30 years of experience who also oversees the nursery’s internal pruning program across more than 500 acres of young trees. Residential and commercial pruning programs run in spring and fall, the seasons that best support tree health. The team includes Licensed Applicators qualified to spray weeds on commercial properties and can tailor mowing, edging, debris clearing, road and parking-lot sanding programs to each site’s needs and budget.

Growers’ supplies and wholesale shipping reach

Beyond trees and shrubs, PNLS supplies a growers’ supplies line that includes durable vinyl tie tape for staking, tying, training and flagging; custom-ordered fiberglass stakes in lengths up to 12 feet; treated burlap liners in 48×48, 54×60 and 60×60 inch sizes; and 20-gallon professional tree water bags for hot, dry conditions. Wholesale shipments have reached as far south as Salt Lake City, Utah, north to Alaska, west to Whistler, British Columbia and east to Manitoba.
