其后 ‘Bold Secret’、’Pick of the Litter’、’Loose as a Goose’、’Cape Romain Harbor’、’Cotton Candy Carnival’、’My Lips Are Sealed’、’Black Mingo’ 陆续在 2007-2009 年获奖;2011 年 ‘A Gathering of Angels’、’Browns Ferry Peaches and Cream’ 与献给其母的 ‘Thelma Douglas’ 同时获奖。2018 年起 ‘Breathing in Snowflakes’(H. Douglas 2016)先后获得 AHS Award of Merit、Lambert/Webster Award 与 Stout Silver Medal,并赢得 AHS President’s Cup 与 Ned Roberts Award;同年的 ‘Papa Goose’(H. Douglas 2015)获得 AHS Lenington All-American Award,’Heidi Douglas’ 凭系列品种获 Bertrand Farr Silver Medal,奠定该苗圃在 AHS 体系中的标杆地位。
Overview
Browns Ferry Gardens is a family-run daylily hybridizing and retail nursery located on Browns Ferry Road in Georgetown, South Carolina, founded in 1987 by Charles Douglas and his mother Thelma Douglas on a former tobacco plantation that has been transformed into a destination for daylily enthusiasts. Now in its thirty-ninth year of operation, the nursery is co-run by Charles Douglas, Heidi Douglas (a Cincinnati-born hybridizer and Charles’s wife) and a third-generation contributor, Gene Tanner, who is best known for his ruffled diploid lines. The property functions as an American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) Large Display Garden and has previously served as both an AHS Regional and National tour garden.
Site Identity and Family Heritage
The website consistently brands itself as “Browns Ferry Gardens — The Daylilies of Charles & Heidi Douglas and Gene Tanner”, with each hybridizer pursuing a distinct line: Charles focuses on tetraploid northern-dormant lines selected for branching, budcount, and rebloom; Heidi develops the smaller-flowered H. Douglas introductions; and Gene Tanner contributes a series of ruffled diploid cultivars. The site publishes three main catalogs — a 2026 Newest Introductions page that lists Charles, Heidi, and Gene introductions side by side; a Last Chance page for cultivars about to be retired; and a large Retired Introductions archive. Site visitors are encouraged to wander the seedling beds and flag favorites that may become future introductions, reflecting a hands-on, family-scale breeding philosophy that has produced dozens of AHS-recognized cultivars since 2004.
Sales and Visiting Hours
Mail order is available year-round with a 100-dollar minimum, dispatched via U.S. Priority Mail between mid-April and mid-September with a 12-month guarantee on plant survival and trueness-to-name. The garden is open without appointment on two weekends in late May and early June each year (the last Friday and Saturday of May, plus the first Friday and Saturday of June, from 9 AM to 3 PM); all other visits require an advance phone call to schedule with Charles or Heidi, who return calls and emails in the evenings. The nursery sits on Highway 51 (Browns Ferry Road), fifteen miles inland from Georgetown, seventy miles north of Charleston, and fifty miles south of Myrtle Beach. The on-site sales office is air-conditioned with couches and a clean restroom, and rocking chairs on the front porch look out over thousands of potted daylilies.
Club Program and Order Services
A dedicated daylily club purchasing program offers clubs that place a 500-dollar order (paid by club check) at least double the value in plants, suitable for table sales, auctions, or member adopt-a-plant events; Charles and Heidi are also available as guest speakers for club meetings, presenting both their own and Gene Tanner’s programs. Payment methods include MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, PayPal, personal check, and money order. International shipping has been suspended due to a European Union ban on plant material from regions where the Xyrella bacteria is present, which includes South Carolina. The in-site PayPal Shopping Cart automatically calculates shipping at 15 dollars for 1-5 plants, 20 dollars for 6-10, 27 dollars for 11-20, 36 dollars for 21-30, and 48 dollars for 31-50, with custom quotes available for larger club orders.
Hybridizing Goals and AHS Awards
The core breeding priorities at Browns Ferry Gardens are hardiness, branching, high budcount, and a long bloom season with reliable rebloom, achieved primarily through the use of northern-dormant parent material. The first Douglas introductions to receive an AHS Honorable Mention were ‘Strawberry Patch’ and ‘Carolina Sun Fun’ in 2004, followed by ‘Bold Secret’ and ‘Pick of the Litter’ in 2007, then ‘Loose as a Goose’, ‘Cape Romain Harbor’ and ‘Cotton Candy Carnival’ in 2008, and ‘My Lips Are Sealed’ alongside the near-white black-eyed ‘Black Mingo’ in 2009. The breakthrough AHS Award of Merit cycle began in 2011 with ‘A Gathering of Angels’, ‘Browns Ferry Peaches and Cream’, and ‘Thelma Douglas’ (named for Charles’s mother). The garden’s signature cultivar, ‘Breathing in Snowflakes’ (H. Douglas 2016), earned the AHS Award of Merit, the Lambert/Webster Award, the Stout Silver Medal, the AHS President’s Cup, and the Ned Roberts Award; ‘Papa Goose’ (H. Douglas 2015) won the AHS Lenington All-American Award, and Heidi Douglas received the Bertrand Farr Silver Medal for excellence in hybridizing, cementing Browns Ferry Gardens as one of the most decorated AHS tour gardens in the southeastern United States.
