Nursery History and Arizona Desert Greenhouses
Arid Lands Greenhouses is a family-run succulent and cactus nursery located on the southwestern edge of Tucson, Arizona, in the Sonoran Desert, serving both wholesale buyers and retail collectors. The nursery is operated by Bob Webb and Toni Yocum, who have cultivated succulent plants for more than thirty-five years; Toni is a Tucson native, and the couple took over the greenhouse operation in the early 2000s after extensive botanical travels across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The greenhouse complex maintains winter minimum temperatures above 42 degrees Fahrenheit and houses one of the largest production collections of succulents and cacti in the Arizona Sonoran Desert.
Core Inventory and Wholesale-Retail Operations
The nursery maintains a living inventory of more than three thousand succulent and cactus species. Core genera include Agave, Aloe, Haworthia, Gasteria, Anacampseros, Avonia, Bursera, Commiphora, Fouquieria, Euphorbia, Pachypodium, Pelargonium, Sansevieria and Uncarina, together with geophytes, cucurbits, asclepiads, pachycaul trees, hoyas, pachyforms, terrestrial bromeliads and orchids, mesembs and bulbs. In addition to widely cultivated taxa, the nursery offers many rare and recently described species collected during field expeditions to Oman, Yemen, Socotra, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.
Plant Sourcing, Field Expeditions and Rare Taxa
The business operates a dual wholesale and retail model. Wholesale customers must supply an Arizona Form 5000 resale license; the minimum order is two hundred dollars of plants on the wholesale list with at least six individuals per species, and additional species are then priced at thirty percent off. Out-of-state wholesale shipments are billed exact shipping plus a ten percent handling fee. Retail customers order through the online catalog year-round, with plants shipped bare-root for plant health and reduced freight, and optional forty-two-degree heat packs offered in cold weather. Summer hours run from seven AM to three PM, fall-winter-spring hours from eight AM to four PM, with the nursery closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Publications, Educational Resources and Cultivation Guides
Beyond commerce, the nursery functions as a hub for succulent and cactus scholarship. Bob Webb frequently presents to cactus and succulent societies and has co-described new species in Agave and Sansevieria. The nursery runs its own publishing imprint, Arid Lands Press, whose first title is a pictorial guide to the genus Sansevieria, with future volumes planned on Euphorbia and the succulent flora of Namaqualand. The website maintains a taxonomic changes page, a beginner’s guide and a resources page covering Latin naming conventions, soil mixes of approximately fifty percent pumice, twenty-five percent organic matter and twenty-five percent coarse sand, container selection, light, airflow, watering, fertilization and winter protection, providing systematic cultivation knowledge for both newcomers and advanced collectors.
