G. D. Böhlje Baumschulen

Family Heritage and Historical Roots

G. D. Böhlje Baumschule is located at Oldenburger Strasse 9, Westerstede, Lower Saxony. It was founded in 1845 by Johann Hinrich Böhlje (1828–1880), whose father set aside land on the present site for him to start a nursery against the family’s wishes. The business is now in its sixth generation under Dirk Böhlje. Sales and distribution are handled by Böhlje Pflanzenhandel GmbH, registered at Amtsgericht Oldenburg under HRB 120226. In its early decades the nursery sold mainly fruit trees, issuing its first price list with plant descriptions in 1860 and switching to an illustrated annual list with cultural notes from 1861.

Founding Role in the German Rhododendron Trade

The second-generation owner, Gerhard Diedrich Böhlje (1862–1951), known as Opa Böhlje, took over the nursery in his own right in 1883. He shifted the focus to rhododendrons, evergreen broadleaves and conifers, and studied Dutch propagation methods on regular trips to Boskoop from 1881 onwards. He is regarded as one of the pioneers who introduced rhododendrons into German garden culture, and was the first grower in Germany to propagate Picea omorika. Trial plantings in oak and pine stands included Tsuga heterophylla and other conifers.

Specialties and Plant Range

Today’s product range centres on deciduous shrubs and trees (Laubgehölze), conifers (Nadelgehölze), Ericaceae such as Calluna, Erica, Daboecia, Kalmia and Pieris, and shaped or topiary plants (Kegel, Kugel, Formgehölze). Rhododendrons remain the signature line: the catalogue lists wild species, hybrids, Japanese azaleas, Yakushimanum, deciduous azaleas and Williamsianum hybrids, totalling close to four hundred rhododendron varieties alone, and the conifer range runs to roughly three hundred and seventy cultivars.

Sales Channels and Customer Base

The nursery runs a dual wholesale and retail operation. The wholesale side supplies other nurseries and garden centres, offering one-stop order assembly in disposable or returnable packaging, scheduled collection or forwarder delivery. The retail side operates from the on-site Schaugarten and Privatverkauf, advised by Martina Müller (graduate engineer) and Dirk Böhlje, opening for the 2026 season on 2 March. Wholesale customer service is handled by Uwe Dreesmann and Ulrich Würth.

Modernisation and Site Identity

In 1986 the business was split into G. D. Böhlje Baumschulen for production and Böhlje Pflanzenhandel GmbH for sales and distribution, and container cultivation was introduced. The Schaugarten and retail park followed in 1996. Further upgrades added a new container area with large-tree loading bays in 2012, extended parking in 2014, an enlarged loading yard in 2015, and a new greenhouse for the retail side in 2016. The nursery is a member of the German Nursery Association (BdB) and runs a separate retail shop at boehlje-pflanzen.de.
