EUNOPS Logo

English Version

The European Network of Palm Scientists (EUNOPS) is an informal association of biologists with a wide spectrum of research interests in palms (Arecaceae or Palmae). Established in 2001, EUNOPS facilitates exchange of information on palm research taking place in Europe and promotes integration and collaboration among scientists, students and early-career researchers. Since its inception, EUNOPS has held annual meetings in different European venues, providing a regular forum for face-to-face discussions and research presentations.

Organization and Operations

EUNOPS has no formal legal entity or permanent executive board. Coordination is handled by a Scientific Programme Lead and a Logistical Contact for each annual meeting, while ad-hoc steering committees formed around each meeting determine venues and content. The 2025 meeting was co-organized by Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

EUNOPS meetings are open to researchers worldwide but especially welcome students and postdoctoral researchers, encouraging lively academic debate. There is no registration fee; only the optional conference dinner incurs a modest charge.

Research Topics and Partners

EUNOPS meetings cover a broad spectrum of topics including palm taxonomy and morphology, phylogenetics and evolution, ecology and trait adaptations, conservation and sustainable utilization, ethnobotany, and data infrastructure such as the Palmweb online database.

Key participants include Aarhus University (Denmark), Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (UK), Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Conservatory and Botanic Gardens of Geneva (Switzerland), New York Botanical Garden (USA), and Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Netherlands).

Palm Phylogeny Working Group

The Palm Phylogeny Working Group (PPWG) is one of the most impactful international collaborations under the EUNOPS umbrella. Founded at the World Palm Symposium 2015 in Quindío, Colombia, its goal is to construct a comprehensive species-level phylogeny for all palms. The group coordinates laboratories worldwide using a unified target sequence capture approach, ensuring data from different teams can be integrated.

Scientific Impact

Research coordinated through the ALARM project demonstrated that Trachycarpus fortunei seeds can germinate and survive in the wild as far north as Scandinavia, establishing palms as a reliable indicator of climate change in Europe.
