Family Heritage and History
Pépinière Stervinou is a family‑run nursery based in Brittany, north‑western France, that has been producing a wide range of high‑quality ericaceous plants since the mid‑1940s. Founded in Brest by Pierre Stervinou under the Parcs et Jardins Stervinou retail brand, it began to specialise in Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas toward the end of the 1950s and earned a strong reputation at the Floralies Internationales in Paris, Valenciennes, Hamburg, Orléans and Nantes. The nursery moved to its present site in Guipronvel (Finistère) during the 1970s and was led by Alain Stervinou from 1976 to 2010, before being taken over by Yves‑Marie Stervinou, the third generation of the family.
Nursery Site and Growing Conditions
The nursery occupies about fifteen hectares at Kerguelen, a hamlet north of Guipronvel in the Finistère department, roughly fifteen kilometres from Brest. The site enjoys the mild Atlantic climate and naturally acidic soils typical of north‑western Brittany, conditions that are particularly well suited to Camellias, Rhododendrons, Azaleas and other ericaceous shrubs. A permanent team of fifteen to twenty staff looks after container production throughout the year, allowing year‑round dispatch to professional buyers and individual collectors across France and Europe.
Core Products and Annual Production
Camellias are the flagship production: every year more than 40,000 cuttings and grafts are taken from mother plants collected worldwide, with roughly 200 varieties kept in cultivation after a careful selection for flower form, foliage and disease resistance. Rhododendrons account for an annual output of about 25,000 plants covering more than 100 varieties. The nursery also offers Japanese and Chinese Azaleas, Magnolias, Hydrangeas and a wider range of unusual ornamental shrubs, all listed on its public website.
