Overview
The American Primrose Society (APS) is a professional horticultural organization dedicated to the genus Primula (primroses). Founded in 1941 in Portland, Oregon, the society’s mission is “Bringing Primula Enthusiasts Together.” With over 80 years of history, APS now has members across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan — making it a truly international horticultural community.
History
APS was established in 1941 amid World War II. According to “First Steps” by Florence Levy, plant societies were fashionable at the time. The first primrose show was held in Portland in April 1942, and the first journal was mimeographed in 1943. Despite wartime challenges, the society remained vigilant in exchanging ideas and maintaining enthusiasm for Primula.
Seed Exchange Program
The Seed Exchange is one of APS’s most popular programs. Members can donate or request various primrose seeds through the society’s catalog, which covers rare strains including Auricula, Candelabra Primroses, Primula vialii, and Primula allionii.
Publications and Scholarly Exchange
APS publishes a quarterly journal featuring member articles, cultivar descriptions, cultivation techniques, and the latest research. The journal archive dates back to 1943 and spans 34 volumes of indexes, serving as a vital academic platform for primrose enthusiasts worldwide.
Judging Standards and cultivar Resources
The society has established detailed judging standards for primrose exhibitions, covering show classes, rules, and awards, as well as traditional standards for Gold Laced Polyanthus. APS has also built an extensive pictorial dictionary and cultivar index system documenting a rich diversity of primrose varieties.
Founder Florence Bellis
Florence Bellis was the founder of APS. She established the renowned Barnhaven Primrose Nursery in Portland, developing classic cultivars that remain widely grown today. The early pioneers like Bellis laid the foundation for decades of primrose-growing culture in North America.
