协会的成立背景与三十年的成长

Founding and Three Decades of Membership Growth

The American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) was founded in 1994 by Diane Bouchier, PhD, in the United States. The organization grew from approximately 200 individual members at its founding to more than 1,900 individual members and 40 institutional members by its 30th anniversary in 2024. ASBA maintains its headquarters in New York and has held many of its annual international exhibitions in cooperation with the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). Milestone celebrations were hosted in 2014 (20th anniversary), 2019 (25th anniversary) and 2024 (30th anniversary). In 2026 the Garden Club of America presented its Eloise Payne Luquer Medal to ASBA.

Organizational Scope and Nine Core Values

ASBA is a non-profit professional society open to individuals and institutions who share an interest in the tradition and contemporary practice of botanical art. Its statement of core values lists nine guiding principles: We Belong, We Connect, We Create, We Learn and Teach, We Recognize Achievement, We Show and Share, We Lead, We Contribute, and We Have an Impact. The Code of Ethics for the Botanical Artist Working in the Field is published alongside the core values to guide members conducting field work with native flora.

Membership Tiers, Annual Dues and Quarterly Journal Schedule

The membership year runs from January 1 through December 31. Annual dues are USD 95 for individual members in the United States, USD 120 for international individual members, USD 150 for U.S. institutional members and USD 175 for international institutional members. Member benefits include a subscription to The Botanical Artist quarterly journal (March, June, September and December issues), access to the online member directory, monthly eHighlights, eligibility for the annual international exhibition, the annual meeting, artist and education grants, local Chapters or Artists’ Circles, the online Teacher Directory and listings of personal exhibitions or workshops. Print delivery of the journal is determined by the renewal date (February 10, May 10, August 10 or November 10).

Annual Exhibitions, Awards and Conference Geography

The Annual International Exhibition juries work from around the world and presents five annual awards. The 2025 recipients were Betsy Rogers-Knox (Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art), Myra Sourkes (James White Service Award), Rogério Lupo (Botanical Illustrator Award for Excellence in Scientific Botanical Art), Carol Woodin (Jessica Tcherepnine Lifetime Achievement Award) and Daleen Roodt (Lizzie Sanders New Artist Award). The annual meeting rotates among U.S. cities; 2024 Pittsburgh, 2025 St. Paul, 2026 Denver (alongside the Spring Symposium), 2027 Boston, 2028 Phoenix; 2020, 2021 and 2022 were held online. Botanical Art OnDemand™ (botanicalartondemand.org) maintains an archive of recorded demonstrations and lectures.

Chapters, Artists’ Circles and Seven Partner Certificate Programs

ASBA supports two kinds of local groups: Chapters, which are separately incorporated non-profit entities that require at least five members, by-laws and annual meetings, and Artists’ Circles, which are informal groups primarily composed of ASBA members. As of 2025, more than a dozen chapters and circles are active in Pittsburgh, the Chesapeake Bay region, Denver, Austin, Portland, Chicago, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and elsewhere. Seven partner institutions host the Certificate Programs in Botanical Art: Chicago Botanic Garden, Denver Botanic Gardens, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, New York Botanical Garden, North Carolina Botanical Garden at UNC-Chapel Hill, Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, and Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Honorary Directors on record include the late Shirley Sherwood, PhD, Anne-Marie Evans FLS, Jenny Phillips and founder Diane Bouchier, PhD.

Annual Report, Artist Grants and Outreach Programs

ASBA publishes an annual independent financial review alongside IRS Form 990 and New York CHAR500 filings; all three documents are available from the Annual Report page for each year from 2013 onward. Artist Grants follow an August 1 deadline and require two consecutive years of membership plus a two-year gap since any previous grant. The Ambassador Program coordinates international exchange with botanical art societies in the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, South Africa and elsewhere. K-12 outreach introduces botanical art to school-age students. The site is hosted on the ClubExpress platform and serves as the hub for member programs, calls for entries and class listings.
