Origins and Founder

Birch Meadow Greenhouses is a family-run greenhouse retail garden centre located 22 km southwest of the Town of Athabasca, in northern Alberta, Canada, on the banks of the Athabasca River. The source site is birchmeadowgreenhouses.com. It was founded in 1985 by Lois Robocon, beginning as a small family-run operation of roughly 300 square feet. Over the past 41 years, the property has been continuously managed by the Robocon family without any franchising or chain affiliation, making it a representative example of the small-scale family greenhouse + seasonal retail model common across Alberta’s prairie towns.

Four Decades of Growth

From its 300 square-foot beginnings in 1985, Birch Meadow Greenhouses has expanded its production area to more than 15,000 square feet and now staffs 15 to 20 full-time and seasonal employees during peak production months. The centre now hosts an annual Wine & Cheese Gala, DIY group planting projects, giant hanging basket training courses, and large-scale floral orders. It is widely regarded as one of the most plant-diverse and longest-running greenhouse retail operations in the Athabasca region, with seasonal hours running from late April through the end of May. Her industry recognition and community contributions have been documented by multiple official bodies: in 2010 she received the Alberta Greenhouse Grower of the Year award, recognizing the floral displays she designs and maintains throughout the Town of Athabasca; in 2012 she was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship by Lions International for her volunteer work; in 2015 the Athabasca Rotary Club presented her with the Integrity Business of the Year award; and in 2021 the Athabasca District Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Athabasca jointly conferred the Lifetime Award of Achievement.
