The nursery runs two main lines of business: container and field-grown tree production for the wholesale market, and a seasonal retail garden centre open to walk-in customers. Wholesale orders go out to garden centres and landscape contractors across the prairie provinces, while the retail yard in Nipawin sells directly to local gardeners every spring. Nursery History

Boughen Nurseries was founded in 1937 by Ken and Doris Boughen, who started with a few acres of hardy fruit trees for the local Saskatchewan market. Sons Bud (Pat) and Jim (Vivian) took over the family business in 1979. After Bud passed away in 1989, Harvey and Irene Detbrenner purchased the nursery in 1994 and ran it together with their son Clint. In January 2021, Cris Richer — born and raised in Nipawin — bought the business and has continued the more than 80-year family tradition of supplying quality fruit trees, shrubs and shade trees with the friendly small-town service that longtime customers remember.
