Aspen Greenhouses Ltd. is a family-owned modern greenhouse operation located in Lacombe County, central Alberta. Founded in 1990 by Dutch immigrants Bert and Annelies Vander Vlugt, the business has grown over more than three decades from a small 7-acre outdoor perennial seed plot and a 19,000-square-foot tomato greenhouse into a 160,000-square-foot potted plant production facility serving both wholesale garden centre customers and seasonal retail shoppers across the region.

Locally Grown, Locally Sold: Wholesale and Retail

All plants are propagated and finished in the company’s own gutter-connected greenhouses south of Gull Lake, starting from seed or unrooted cuttings sourced from suppliers around the world. The wholesale arm supplies annual and winter-hardy perennial plants to national chain stores and independent garden centres throughout Alberta, while a seasonal on-site retail outlet, opened in 2006 in response to strong local demand, sells directly to home gardeners each spring.

Product Range, Hanging Baskets and Planter Arrangements

The product range is built around four core categories: annuals, perennials, herbs and ornamental grasses, with dozens of cultivars and colour combinations selected to suit central Alberta’s climate, from popular bedding plants such as petunias, marigolds and geraniums to drought- and temperature-tolerant perennials and ornamental grass blends. Alongside these raw material lines, Aspen Greenhouses produces a large volume of ready-to-go hanging baskets and planter arrangements that are pre-designed in the greenhouse for colour, form and growth timing, so customers can hang them or place them on a patio, porch or yard straight away. The wholesale and retail arms share the same greenhouse production line, allowing trade buyers to receive the same pre-finished products that walk-in shoppers pick up at the seasonal outlet.

Three-Stage Expansion and the 2018 Family Transition

Second-generation family members Martin and Ferdinand Vander Vlugt took over ownership in 2018, with the greenhouse complex now measuring 160,000 square feet and a renewed focus on retail sales. The transition from hothouse tomatoes and outdoor seed production in the 1990s, through a half-and-half period around 2002, to a fully potted plant operation from 2004 onward marks the company’s evolution into one of central Alberta’s established locally grown plant producers.
