Garden and Conservancy Origins
The Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy is a non-profit public garden in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast, established by plant collector Constance P. Hansen beginning in 1973 and tended by her for two decades until her death in 1993. After Connie passed away, neighbours and local horticulturists formed the Conservancy to purchase the property from the estate and continue her plantings. Today the garden is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year, free of charge, and is supported by donations and a small volunteer board.
Founder Connie Hansen
Constance P. Hansen was raised in Oregon, studied botany at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent her working years in California collecting plants and raising a family. After retiring in 1973 she returned to Oregon and bought a damp, sheltered parcel in Lincoln City that was originally developed in the 1950s by local artist and painting teacher Maud Wanker. She cleared sod along the creek, planted Styrax japonicus, Japanese maples and Magnolia ‘Alexandrina’ near the house, and gradually added iris, primula, euphorbia, ornamental grasses, dogwoods and magnolias across nearly an acre.
Rhododendron Speciality Garden
Connie was an avid collector of rhododendrons, and the garden today holds hundreds of varieties ranging from the tiniest dainty-leaved forms to tree-sized specimens such as Cynthia, Sir Charles Lemon and Dame Nellie Melba. The cool, damp coastal climate is ideal for the genus, and the bloom season stretches from the Christmas-flowering cultivar Christmas Cheer through April and May peaks and into early July. Companion plantings include azaleas, heathers, primulas, irises, magnolias, dogwoods, Japanese maples, bulbs and ground covers woven among the tidy grass paths.
Volunteers and Horticultural Education
A small group of dedicated volunteers tends the Garden year-round, with the Head Gardener’s reports documenting ongoing restoration work, such as the 2023 program of removing diseased rhododendrons and giving overlooked plants such as Hyacinthoides hispanica (Spanish bluebell) and H. non-scripta (English bluebell) more space to naturalise. The ‘It Started With A Seed’ series shares seed-saving and sowing techniques, and quarterly newsletters, plant-sale events and an annual festival photo contest connect the Conservancy with residents and visitors.
Visiting the Garden
The garden is open every day from dawn to dusk, free of charge, and the Garden House is staffed between March 1 and November 30 from 10 am to 2 pm. The site is roughly two hours from Portland and a little over an hour from Salem, accessible from US-101 by turning west onto 33rd Street; parking is limited to about 12 cars, with several wheelchair-friendly paths through the beds. Donations, plant sales and volunteer Tuesdays at 10 am sustain ongoing restoration; street address, post office box, telephone and email are intentionally omitted here and available on the official site linked below.
