KIRA(Kingsbrae International Residence for the Arts)艺术家驻留项目每年向六位跨学科创作者提供一个月驻留空间,与花园公共空间形成日常互动。

Historical Evolution

Kingsbrae Garden was created by John and Lucinda Flemer to preserve the family’s former estate, with construction beginning in 1996 after a partnership was established with the Province of New Brunswick, the Town of St. Andrews, and the surrounding community. The 27-acre horticultural landmark opened to the public in spring 1998, combining traditional and modern planting styles with a strong cultural and educational mission.

Garden System

The garden is anchored by more than 50,000 perennials arranged across themed spaces including the White, Rose, Knot, Perennial and Cottage gardens, alongside Rhododendron, Heath and Heather, Ornamental Shrub, Bird and Butterfly, Herb, Hydrangea, Scents and Sensitivity, and Edible gardens. A one-third-scale Dutch windmill, cedar maze, rill water feature, ponds, and a wooded trail through old-growth Acadian forest complete the landscape narrative.

Art and Cultural Programming

The KIRA International Residence for the Arts, established in 2016, hosts six interdisciplinary artists-in-residence each year and links studios directly to the garden’s public spaces. The 1,200-seat KIRA Amphitheatre, inaugurated in 2018, frames the Bay of Fundy as a natural backdrop for music festivals, sculpture exhibitions, theatre, and community gatherings that animate the garden throughout the season.

Stewardship and Community

Designated an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary during the construction phase, Kingsbrae continues to apply environmentally responsible horticultural practices across all maintenance work. The site is home to alpacas, peacocks, pygmy goats, rabbits, ducks, and Canada’s first Wollemi pine in cultivation, while partnering with local schools, culinary teams, and nonprofits on summer camps, school programs, and edible-landscape workshops for the surrounding region.

Recognition and Standing

Kingsbrae has consistently been ranked the top thing to do in the St. Andrews region on Tripadvisor and was named a Canada 150 Garden in 2017 and Canadian Garden of the Year in 2013. Founder Lucinda Flemer received the Canadian Garden Tourism Awards’ Garden Person of the Year honour in 2017, with further recognition from Fodor’s Choice, the North American Garden Tourism Conference, and the New Brunswick Tourism Pioneer Award.
