Florida Colors Plumeria

Florida Colors Nursery – Homestead, Florida Plumeria Specialist

Luc and Carol Vannoorbeeck and Their Plumeria Legacy

Before founding Florida Colors Nursery, Luc and Carol Vannoorbeeck had operated a thriving horticulture business for years. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated southern Florida, completely destroying their hibiscus nursery. Undeterred, they rebuilt the following year in 1993 and shifted their focus to plumeria—a decision that would shape the American plumeria landscape. Under Luc’s leadership, the nursery quickly became a major force in the plumeria community. After Luc’s untimely passing in 2013, Carol continued the legacy alongside partners Tex and Kay Norwood, who joined the nursery from Texas in 2012, bringing fresh energy to the operation.

Collection and Contributions to Plumeria in the US

Florida Colors Nursery has developed over 100 named Plumeria rubra cultivars, including Abigail (a wonderful compact variety), Luc’s Magnum Opus, Nebula, and the profusely blooming Tex Huestis—favorites among plumeria aficionados worldwide. The nursery is especially celebrated for introducing several plumeria species to the US market, most notably the highly adaptable Plumeria pudica and the irresistibly fragrant Plumeria stenopetala.

Grafting Techniques and Quality Standards

The nursery is renowned for its grafting expertise—rather than rooting cuttings directly, Luc preferred grafting plumeria scions onto established rootstock to produce stronger, more resilient plants. This method has become a benchmark of quality for the nursery. The grafted combinations with superior rootstocks give Florida Colors plumerias faster growth, greater environmental adaptability, and have set the standard that many other growers now aspire to.

About Plumeria

Plumeria, belonging to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae), are deciduous or semi-evergreen small trees and shrubs native to Central America and the Caribbean, now widely cultivated throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. With glossy green foliage and showy terminal inflorescences—five-lobed flowers in white, yellow, pink, red, orange, or multicolor, many with rich fragrance—plumeria are iconic in tropical landscapes and as fragrant cut flowers, famously used in Hawaiian lei garlands. They are fast-growing, heat-tolerant, and drought-resistant, making them favorites for tropical gardens and indoor containers.
