Garden Overview

The Beausejour Daylily Gardens is a roughly two-acre display park located at the north entrance to Beausejour, Manitoba, on First Street North. It is the only official American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) display garden on the Canadian Prairies. The site is a 3B display garden showcasing modern daylilies, peonies, iris and lilies, alongside the newest Manitoba-hardy shrubs and fruit trees, including haskaps, grapes, cherry, apricot, pear and apple. The Gardens welcome more than 5,000 visitors each year and serve as a community horticultural and ecological showcase for eastern Manitoba.

Volunteers and Community Engagement

The Gardens are maintained by a team of more than 40 volunteers, known as Garden Angels, who keep the plantings up to official AHS display garden standards. About 50% of the volunteers come from Beausejour, 47% from the RM of Brokenhead, and 3% from Winnipeg and other areas. Sixteen new Garden Angels are recruited each year. The Gardens are funded and improved through volunteer labour, private contributions, fundraising and grant programs. Visitors are invited to sign the on-site guest book and share their comments and suggestions.

Plant Collection and Display System

The plant collection is organised around the AHS official display garden criteria, with dedicated beds for modern daylilies, peonies, iris and lilies, complemented by a curated range of Manitoba-hardy fruiting trees and ornamental shrubs. Displays are arranged as mixed borders keyed to seasonal bloom, so the best flowering material is on view throughout the garden season. The Gardens also participate in AHS regional display and cultivar exchange programmes, supporting cultivar regional adaptation trials in the Canadian Prairies.

Media Coverage and Community Events

The Gardens were featured in a five-page article in the Summer 2021 edition of The Gardener magazine, written by Evelyn Lundeen with photography by Mary Veldman, covering the garden history, plant collection and volunteer programme. The article (Gardener Summer 2021 Beausejour) is published as a PDF on the official site. The Gardens collaborate with the town of Beausejour and Manitoba horticultural associations, and share seasonal bloom updates, volunteer calls and event notices through their Facebook page at facebook.com/beausejourdaylilygardens.
