Organisation Profile and History
The Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit gardening organisation serving more than 3,000 gardeners across the Pacific Northwest. Founded in Oregon in 1984 after a gardening Study Weekend featuring Beth Chatto, it first promoted herbaceous perennials and later broadened its focus to plants and gardening at every level. HPSO remains one of the largest gardening groups on the US West Coast, supported by an active board, committees and part-time staff.

Grants, Scholarships and Support

The Elaine Joines Grants Fund supports research and special botanical, horticultural or historic gardens, including community gardens, while the Bruce Wakefield Scholarship Fund supports horticulture programmes at Clackamas Community College and Portland Community College. The Parker Sanderson Lecture Fund helps bring recognised horticultural speakers to the Portland area, giving the wider gardening community access to expert knowledge.
