Cantigny Park

History Hike、Bike Tour of the Gardens、Accessible Birding

Historical Evolution and Estate Origins

Cantigny Park, located in Wheaton, Illinois, occupies the 500-acre former estate of Colonel Robert R. McCormick (1880—1955), longtime publisher and editor of the Chicago Tribune. McCormick took over as President of Tribune Company in 1911 and led the paper for 44 years, building WGN Radio (1924), Tribune Tower (1925) and WGN-TV (1948) into a major midwest media empire. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of Cantigny (April 20—May 28, 1918), America’s first victory in the conflict, for which he received the Distinguished Service Medal. After the war he renamed his Wheaton farm in honor of the French village; upon his death in 1955, his will established the Robert R. McCormick Charitable Trust (now the McCormick Foundation, with more than US$1 billion in assets), designating the estate as a public educational and recreational space. The park opened to the public in 1958 and today welcomes more than 400,000 visitors annually.

McCormick Legacy and Museum Complex

Cantigny’s two anchor museums form the cultural backbone of the McCormick legacy. The First Division Museum (opened 1975) interprets the history of the U.S. Army’s famed 1st Infantry Division (nicknamed the “Big Red One”), with interactive exhibits spanning both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and post-9/11 operations, including a restored M4 Sherman tank and an immersive battlefield theater. The Robert R. McCormick House, reimagined in 2016, weaves together the stories of the Colonel, his first wife Amy Irwin Adams (a Red Cross nurse and impressionist art collector) and his second wife Maryland Mathison Hooper, presented via a self-guided audio tour narrated in a voice modeled after Colonel McCormick himself. The Colonel’s role in championing the First Amendment — including the legal groundwork for Near v. Minnesota (1931) — and his founding of Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center (1960 dedication) anchor the museum’s narrative of journalism, civic duty and philanthropy.

Franz Lipp’s Midwestern Display Gardens

The Cantigny Gardens, designed in 1967 by renowned landscape architect Franz Lipp, span nearly 30 acres and contain more than 160,000 annuals, perennials, ground covers and woody plants, making them one of the largest display garden complexes in the Midwest. The garden rooms include: the Inner Ring and Bur Oak central square, which retains Lipp’s original 1960s geometry; the White Garden, inspired by Sissinghurst Castle Garden in England; the Fountain Garden, whose original 1968 Lipp fountain was carefully recreated in 2019 with programmed jets that change intensity about every 14 minutes; the Lower Display Garden, where statues representing the four seasons were relocated from the Colonel’s former Chicago residence; and the 200-foot-long Perennial Border, reimagined in August 2024 with cobalt-blue Waffle Urns as anchor points and a blue-violet-lavender-pink color palette. An 18,500-square-foot greenhouse (opened 1987) produces nearly 1,000 botanical varieties and roughly 250,000 plants annually for spring, summer and fall replanting.

Natural Areas and Audubon Sanctuary

Beyond the formal gardens, Cantigny maintains substantial natural areas, all part of its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the National Audubon Society. Gold Pond, edged with more than 12,000 native aquatic plants including sedges and rushes, functions as both a wildlife habitat and a stormwater-management system, with a quarter-mile crushed-stone path, a boardwalk and a gazebo along its shore. Prairie View, designed in the spirit of Jens Jensen’s Prairie School, recreates pre-settlement Illinois plant communities of grasses, sedges, ephemeral wildflowers and wetland edges; its central vista includes a wooden trellis with benches and a stone seat wall popular for wedding ceremonies. Butterfly Hill, the highest point on the 500-acre property, was created in 2017 from displaced soil produced by Project New Leaf; its slopes are blanketed with native grasses and pollinator-friendly plant material.

Public Programs, Education and the McCormick Foundation

As part of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Cantigny operates a robust year-round calendar of public programs. Free or low-cost offerings include the History Hike (45-minute guided walking tour), Bike Tour of the Gardens led by greenhouse grower Bob Carr, Accessible Birding events and the immersive Robert R. McCormick House experience, which is free for 2026 with reservation. The park participates in the Museums for All cooperative initiative, providing admission for one vehicle with up to eight passengers for families presenting an EBT or WIC card. Adjacent amenities include the Cantigny Golf complex (27 holes designed by Roger Packard, opened 1989, with the Cantigny Golf Academy and the 9-hole Cantigny Youth Links), nearly three miles of walking trails, the Red Oak Farms Playground, and the LEED-certified Education Center (opened 2010). All admission and program revenue supports the McCormick Foundation’s five program areas: early-childhood education, journalism, civics, communities and veterans.
