园区定位与历史
切尔西药用植物园位于伦敦切尔西区皇家医院路, 在泰晤士河南岸占地约四英亩, 自 1673 年由伦敦药剂师公会创立以来, 一直是英国历史最悠久的药用植物专类园之一。园内栽培植物超过 4,500 种, 维持三个多世纪以来不间断的引种与保育记录, 现由登记慈善机构负责运营, 向公众开放参观与教学体验。

园区按生态与用途划分为多个室外与室内展区。药用植物区系统栽培传统欧洲与亚洲药用植物, 池塘区围绕园中水景构建水生植物群落, 林地区保留英式林地群落结构, 玻璃温室群包括热带温室与多肉温室, 保育对温度敏感的稀有物种。园区因所处泰晤士河南岸的微气候优势, 培育出英国室外少见的大型结实橄榄树, 体现了伦敦市内独特的小气候特征。

园内活体收藏涵盖 4,000 余个植物分类群, 包括一批受威胁物种的迁地保护种群, 由专业园艺团队按分类学与药效双重体系长期维护。机构通过 Index Seminum 种子名录与英国及海外植物园开展活体植物材料与种子的正规互换, 持续支持稀有物种的迁地保护与回归项目。其植物记录数据库面向研究者和访客开放检索, 是英国药用植物多样性研究的重要数据资源。
科学研究与科普教育
园区长期承担植物分类学、药学与园艺学相关的研究与教学任务, 通过 Florilegium 植物绘画学会持续产出具备科学精确度的植物插图档案, 微气候气象站对园区连续记录温度湿度等数据, 为城市园艺与气候适应研究提供长期观测资料。机构面向中小学、高等教育及成人学习者开展系统化的植物学与药草学课程与园艺实习项目, 注册志愿者团队同时支持保育、研究与公众教育三方面的工作。
参观支持与公众参与
机构通过门票、会员、捐赠与商业活动等渠道筹集资金, 以维持园区维护、玻璃温室修复与公众教育项目。游客可于每周日至周五预约参观并参加季节性活动与社区种植项目。会员、捐赠者与志愿者队伍是机构持续开展保育、科学研究与社会教育工作的重要基础。
The Garden
Chelsea Physic Garden occupies about four acres on Royal Hospital Road in the Chelsea district of London, on the south bank of the Thames. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it has remained one of the oldest medicinal plant gardens in the UK for more than three centuries. The living collection now exceeds 4,500 plants, and the institution is operated as a registered charity open to public visits and learning programmes.
Garden Sections and Features
The garden is organised into a number of outdoor and indoor sections shaped by ecology and use. The medicinal plants beds cultivate traditional European and Asian medicinal species, the pond area hosts an aquatic plant community around its central water feature, the woodland area retains a typical English woodland structure, and the glasshouses include tropical and succulent houses that shelter species sensitive to outdoor conditions. The site’s Thames-side microclimate supports trees such as the UK’s largest fruiting olive tree growing outdoors.
Plant Collections and Ex Situ Conservation
The living collection holds more than 4,000 plant taxa, including populations of threatened species maintained for ex situ conservation. A professional horticulture team manages the collection under both taxonomic and pharmacological systems. Through the Index Seminum seed catalogue the institution exchanges seed and living plant material with botanic gardens across the UK and overseas to support ex situ conservation and reintroduction of rare species, and the plant records database is open to researchers and visitors.
Research and Public Education
The institution sustains long-running work in plant taxonomy, pharmaceutical botany and horticultural science. The Florilegium Society continues to produce scientifically accurate botanical illustration, the on-site weather station maintains a long-term microclimate record useful for urban horticulture and climate adaptation studies, and the Garden hosts systematic programmes in botany and herbal science for school pupils, further education students, and adult learners. Horticultural traineeships support the next generation of horticulture professionals, while a community of registered volunteers backs conservation, research and education across the site.
Visits and Public Support
The charity raises funds through tickets, memberships, donations and commercial events to maintain the garden, restore the historic glasshouses and sustain its public education work. Visitors can book Sunday-to-Friday visits and take part in seasonal programmes and community projects. Members, donors and volunteers remain essential to the institution’s ongoing conservation, scientific research and social education work.
