The US Composting Council (USCC) is the only national non-profit trade association for the composting industry in the United States, founded in 1990 by compost producers and corporate sponsors-most notably Procter and Gamble, which at the time was conducting research on compostable diapers. USCC’s mission centers on advancing organics recycling across the United States, with primary focus on commercial compost manufacturing and marketing. The organization delivers industry training, professional certification programs for compost-facility operators, laboratory testing certification for compost products, and statewide and federal-level policy advocacy. Its membership encompasses compost producers, marketers, organic-residue haulers, equipment manufacturers, product suppliers, academic institutions, public agencies, non-profits, and engineering and consulting firms, forming a comprehensive industry ecosystem.
History and Organizational Foundation
The USCC was founded in 1990 by a coalition of compost producers and corporate sponsors, with Procter and Gamble playing a foundational role due to its research into compostable diapers. In 1992 the Council hosted its first annual conference in Massachusetts, establishing the now-long-standing tradition of the annual USCC composting conference and trade show.
