该苗圃严格遵循 ICN(国际藻类、真菌和植物命名法规)与 ICNCP(国际栽培植物命名法规)双命名体系,是业内极少数能够对其出售植株后代做出质量承诺的苗圃之一。

Exotica Plants is a family-run carnivorous plant nursery located in Cordalba, Queensland, Australia, founded in 1993 by the husband-and-wife team Geoff Mansell and Andrea Mansell. The couple had been collecting and growing Nepenthes, other carnivorous plants, and exotic ornamentals as hobbyists for around 20 years before launching the business, and that long personal background now anchors their position as one of the world leaders in Nepenthes hybridisation, cultivar selection, and breeding.

World Leader in Nepenthes Hybridisation

The nursery has spent more than 30 years focused almost exclusively on tropical pitcher plants, combining species conservation, hybrid combination design, and rigorous cultivar naming under both the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) and the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP). Geoff Mansell has presented on Nepenthes nomenclature and breeding at the 2008 ICPS conference in Sydney and at the 2022 World Carnivorous Plant Day, and Exotica Plants is one of the very few nurseries with the experience to stand behind the progeny of the plants it sells.

Seed-Grown Catalogue and Distribution

Exotica Plants publishes its online catalogue in four sections: Nepenthes Species, Nepenthes Hybrids, Specimen Plants, and an Auctions area aimed at advanced collectors. Because all stock is seed-grown, each plant is genetically unique, and selection pressure is concentrated on size, colour, and vigour. The most complex hybrids on offer can carry up to nine parental lines, and some pitcher forms are large enough to fit an adult arm inside. International distribution is handled through specialist partners such as RedLeaf Exotics in the United States and Chiem Exotics in Germany, with all shipments meeting Australia’s strict biosecurity requirements.

Ordering Model and Customer Workflow

The nursery uses a periodic online catalogue rather than a continuously open shop, with each release announced via Facebook and registered-customer email; there is a minimum order of AUD 100 in plant value, prices include GST, and visitors must create an account and log in to view the catalogue and place orders. Because rare selections are tightly limited and interstate or international import rules can be restrictive, the Order Information page walks new customers through the paperwork, quarantine, and shipping process before checkout.

Cultivation Notes for Buyers

Originating from Borneo, Sumatra, mainland Malaysia, the Philippines, India, and northern Australia, the Nepenthes sold by Exotica Plants perform best in warm, humid conditions with bright, filtered light. The nursery’s Growing Tips page covers substrate choice (typically a live sphagnum and perlite mix), water quality (rain, RO, or distilled water), humidity management, and the post-shipment acclimation period during which plants commonly drop existing pitchers. The catalogue ranges from colourful, beginner-friendly hybrids suited to verandah and greenhouse growing to rare specimen-grade crosses aimed at experienced collectors.
