Park Overview
The International Peace Garden (IPG) is a 2,400-acre botanical garden straddling the border between the United States and Canada, located in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota and Manitoba. Founded in 1932, it stands as one of the world’s few transcontinental gardens, symbolizing friendship and peace between nations. The garden features indoor and outdoor displays, hiking trails, scenic drives, a museum, and diverse natural landscapes.
Founding History
The concept was first conceived in 1928 by Dr. Henry J. Moore of Islington, Ontario, who proposed a garden on an international border where people could share interests and celebrate friendship. In 1929, the National Association of Gardeners approved the plan, selecting a site near the geographical center of North America. On July 14, 1932, 50,000 visitors from across the U.S. and Canada witnessed the dedication ceremony. Manitoba donated 1,451 acres while North Dakota purchased and donated 888 acres along the international boundary. By 1934, operations were underway, and the Civilian Conservation Corps began transforming the prairie into a garden dedicated to peace.
Notable Attractions
The Floral Clock, donated by Bulova in 1964, is an 18-foot diameter clock face featuring more than 2,000 annual flowers, mirroring the original in Berne, Switzerland. The Peace Chapel, built in 1968, is constructed of Manitoba limestone with imported French stained glass panels inscribed with peace quotes from international leaders—remarkably, it is the only building located on the Canadian side of the garden. The Willis Pavilion (1967) was built as part of Canada’s Centennial celebration. Other highlights include the Carillon Bell Tower, the 9/11 Memorial, the Friendship Rock, the Interpretive Center, and scenic camping areas with kayak rentals on Lake Storman.
