Ivor Mace 是英国资深菊花种植者，长期活跃在英国菊花协会（National Chrysanthemum Society，NCS）大型展览菊花的舞台。他从 1972 年起开始种菊，1975 年起持续参加 NCS 年度锦标赛，到今天种植经验累计已超过 48 年。退休前他在南威尔士的 Pencoed 园艺学院做了约 20 年种植与晚间课程协调工作，退休后又过了十多年，仍保持对园艺的热情。
大型展览菊花专研
他的主攻方向是晚花型菊花，尤其是业内俗称为 “Japs” 的大型展览菊花（Large Exhibition Chrysanthemums）——其种源来自日本，体型硕大、花瓣层层内卷，是菊花展上的焦点品类。经营场地虽不大，却靠多年自选、复壮保持了这批精品母本，1998 年他和 Howard Minns 一起用茎尖脱毒技术把这批母本做了微体快繁，把老品种里潜伏的病毒去掉，让今天的母本长势和花质都比三十年前好。
参赛与获奖
在 NCS 年度锦标赛这一英国大型展览菊花最高舞台上，他累计夺得大型展览冠军约 25 次，还曾 17 次凭全场最佳展品捧走 Bentley Trophy。他还多次应菊花协会之邀前往中国、新西兰、美国等地讲学，把英国 Japs 育种和展花经验带到海外展会上。
出版物与资源
他和 Paul Barlow 合著的《菊花——终极电子书》（Chrysanthemums: The Ultimate eBook），原本约 370 页，2012 年末扩充到 440 页以上，覆盖从大型展览到幻想型、早期摘心、庭院耐寒型等所有菊花类型，并配有大量照片和插图。他还为 NCS 写过一本关于晚花菊花栽培的电子书，可以在英国菊花协会购买。
苗圃现状与接班
在供应扦插苗 40 多年后，他已经停掉了这部分的零售业务。Suffolk 的大卫·佩奇（David Page）接管了大型展览菊花的扦插苗供应，可通过电子邮件联系获取品种清单。
他参与运营的 Swansea 菊花协会、Ynyswen G.C. 等社区菊展仍在持续，是英国 Japs 爱好者重要的交流据点。
About the grower
Ivor Mace is a long-time British chrysanthemum grower best known for his late-flowering Large Exhibition cultivars. He began growing chrysanthemums in 1972 and has been exhibiting at the National Chrysanthemum Society’s annual Championships since 1975, giving him more than 48 years of hands-on experience. Before retiring he spent roughly twenty years as a grower and evening-course coordinator at Pencoed Horticultural College in South Wales.
Specialism: Large Exhibition “Japs”
His focus is on the late-flowering chrysanthemums that growers call Large Exhibition cultivars, often shortened to Japs because their ancestry traces back to Japan. The plants produce large, layered incurve blooms that dominate the autumn show bench. Over decades Ivor has re-selected his mother plants for vigour and form, and in 1998 he and Howard Minns ran the entire stock through meristem-tip micropropagation to clean out latent viruses — a step that visibly improved growth and bloom quality in the cultivars still grown today.
Show record
On the NCS show bench he has won the Large Exhibition Championship of Great Britain about 25 times, and has lifted the Bentley Trophy for the best exhibit in the national show on 17 occasions. He has also given talks to growers in China, New Zealand and the United States, sharing the British Japs tradition with clubs abroad.
Publications and resources
Together with Paul Barlow he authored Chrysanthemums: The Ultimate eBook, first released in 2011 at around 370 pages and updated at the end of 2012 to more than 440 pages. It covers every chrysanthemum class — Large Exhibition, Fantasies, early disbuds, hardy garden types and everything in between — with hundreds of photographs and illustrations, available as a PDF download from the website. He has also written an eBook on late-flowering chrysanthemum cultivation for the NCS.
Nursery today
After more than 40 years of supplying rooted cuttings, Ivor has retired from the cuttings side of the business. David Page in Suffolk has taken over supply of Large Exhibition cuttings; growers can contact him by email for a current variety list. Ivor continues to be active through the Swansea Chrysanthemum Society and Ynyswen G.C., keeping the British Japs community connected with the show bench.
