Company Profile and Background
piccoplant Mikrovermehrungen GmbH is a German tissue-culture nursery founded in 1986 in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. The founder and managing director is Elke Haase, a trained biologist (Diplom-Biologin), who built the company from a small research laboratory into a global nursery producing approximately six million young plants per year. The company currently employs around 70 staff at its main site in the Oldenburg area.
Main Product Lines and Production Capacity
Four main product groups form the catalogue: lilac (Flieder) with more than 400 Syringa vulgaris hybrids and special varieties; rhododendron with over 170 hybrids and dwarf cultivars; deciduous azaleas (Azaleen) with around 80 varieties; and bamboo and ornamental grasses (Bambus und Gräser) with about 50 winter-hardy varieties including Arundo donax, Miscanthus and Phyllostachys nigra. The nursery raises young plants in multipalettes, TB9 trays and 2-litre / 3.5-litre containers, and ships wholesale via CC-Containers and Euro-Paletten across Europe.
Biotechnology: Micropropagation and Virus Cleaning
The core technology is in-vitro micropropagation (Mikrovermehrung) using somatische Embryogenese and related biotechnological methods. Plantlets are multiplied under sterile laboratory conditions through disinfection, cell division, shoot formation, root formation and acclimatisation. The laboratory also offers genebank establishment, virus cleaning (Virusbefreiung), and exclusive propagation (Exklusivvermehrung) under confidentiality agreements for European breeders. The resulting tissue-cultured young plants are more robust, better branched and have stronger root systems than conventional cuttings.
Own Brand and Retail Channels
The “Lovely Lilac” brand bundles selected historical Syringa vulgaris hybrids such as Montaigne (pink, double), Paul Deschanel (magenta, double), Victor Lemoine (lilac, double) and President Grevy (blue, double) for retail garden centres. Plants are sold with polypropylene pot covers printed in matching flower colours and a fold-out label in German, English, French and Russian. The company also runs two independent online shops: Fliedertraum for lilac varieties and Manfred Hans for rare vegetable seeds, fig and raspberry plants, and fruit trees.
Research, Demonstration Garden and Sustainability
A Duftgarten (fragrance garden) was established in 2014 on the company grounds, planting more than 150 lilac bushes of different species and varieties as both trial plot and visitor garden. The container nursery operates a closed water cycle with a biological reed-bed treatment system using floating Iris plantings. Native Wallhecken around the perimeter provide habitat for birds, insects and small plants. The company participates in several publicly funded research projects, including EIP-Agri studies on Mikroklee (micro-clover as peat substitute), Zistrose (spectroscopic analysis of secondary metabolites), Vaccinium (organic blueberry cultivation) and an EFRE project on in-vitro propagation of medicinal cannabis.
