Homatt Kulturgärtnerei

About the Nursery

Gärtnerei Homatt AG is a Swiss Bio nursery specialising in ProSpecieRara conservation varieties, located on a sunny slope just outside the village of Ruswil in the Canton of Luzern. It was established on 1 November 2015 when horticulturist Patrick Biedermann, trained in potted plants and cut flowers, took over the long-standing Homatt nursery and reopened it after a five-month rebuild in April 2016 with a combined Bio + ProSpecieRara focus. The site covers roughly seven thousand square metres, including seven glasshouses totalling around three thousand square metres and about two thousand square metres of open-field beds. The nursery is registered as an Aktiengesellschaft (CHE-379.452.734) and certified as a Bioterra Bio nursery.

Production System and Plant Collection

Every plant sold is raised on-site from seed, cuttings, divisions or tissue culture. The main lines are vegetable seedlings, culinary and medicinal herbs, berry bushes, bed and balcony flowers, fuchsias, perennials, and bulbs and tubers. Cultivation follows organic methods without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. The catalogue holds about 1,600 plants, of which roughly 750 are ProSpecieRara-designated conservation varieties, making Homatt one of the few Swiss nurseries able to supply a season-spanning, broad-spectrum old-variety assortment to home gardeners. An outdoor Schaugarten (demonstration garden) is dedicated to the ProSpecieRara mint collection and is open for visits and sniffing from late April through September.

Partnership with ProSpecieRara

ProSpecieRara is a Swiss non-profit foundation established in 1982 that works to safeguard farm animal breeds and crop varieties threatened with extinction; it is among the most recognised civil-society initiatives in Europe for cultivated genetic diversity. Biedermann became an active ProSpecieRara member during his ten years at the Coop home-garden department, and after taking over Homatt he linked the nursery’s production directly into the foundation’s conservation network. Each spring the nursery supplies seven van-loads of seedlings to the ProSpecieRara Setzlingsmarkt at Schloss Wildegg (AG) and is listed as a long-standing partner; the foundation’s own event calendar regularly features the nursery’s open days and seasonal sales.

Sales Outlets, Opening Hours and Training

Three outlets serve customers. The Ruswil headquarters (Homatt, 6017 Ruswil) operates as the Bio Gartencenter and is open from March to October, Tuesday to Friday 13:00–18:00 and Saturday 9:00–16:00; November to February is a winter pause but phone and email contact remain open. The Bio Gartenshop Luzern (Burgerstrasse 17, 6003 Luzern) is open year-round, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9:00–12:00 / 13:30–18:30, and Saturday until 16:00. The Bio Marktstand at Jesuitenplatz in central Luzern runs seasonally from March to October on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, 8:00–12:00, in step with the city-run organic farmers’ market. The nursery also runs a webshop shipping within Switzerland and accepts apprentices on the Gärtner EFZ / EBA tracks with a Pflanzenproduktion specialisation.

Visits, Courses and Events

The Ruswil site welcomes individual visitors and booked groups throughout the season; the seven glasshouses and demonstration garden form an open walking route, and a staff member accompanies tours on request. Three annual public events anchor the calendar: the May “Tag der offenen Gärtnerei” (Open Nursery Day), the spring ProSpecieRara Saisonstartverkauf, and the summer mint-display season. Short Bio gardening courses are held on site in Ruswil and at the Luzern city shop, covering ProSpecieRara home cultivation, balcony vegetable planning, compost practice, and traditional herb identification.
