Nursery Origins
H.W.Hyde was founded in 1926 by Herbert William Hyde. In its early years the nursery grew mainly vegetables with a few flowers on the side. During the Second World War, most of the land and greenhouses were turned over to producing vegetable seed for the war effort, leaving just one greenhouse for Herbert’s passion, which was orchids. After the war his son David joined the business and together they concentrated on cut flowers, with chrysanthemums and gladioli as the main crops. Herbert exhibited these at county shows until his death in 1965, after which David stopped showing and focused on the cut flower side of the operation.
Third Generation and Show Honours
The nursery is now run by David’s three children Sarah, Richard and Elizabeth. The chrysanthemums and gladioli are long gone, and the nursery specialises in a wide range of bulbs, alstroemeria and dahlias. In 2005 the third generation revived their grandfather’s habit of exhibiting. Their first two shows were at RHS Wisley where they won gold with lilies on both occasions. This led to an invitation to exhibit at the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show, where they completed a hat-trick of golds over their first three displays, a feat almost unheard of for new exhibitors. Over the next twelve years the nursery exhibited at most of the major UK flower shows, collecting twelve further Chelsea golds and the Queen’s Jubilee Award, which was presented to Sarah by Her Majesty at the 2012 Chelsea Show.
Relocation and New Site
In early 2020 the nursery relocated from the old Ruscombe site and began building a new nursery on Hilltop Farm just outside the small village of Rusper in West Sussex, about one mile from the A264. Setting up a new nursery during a pandemic has not been straightforward, but three years on the site is close to completion and the nursery is now back to near full capacity across its bulb and perennial ranges.
Main Business and Range
The current range covers alstroemeria, dahlia, lilies, tulips, narcissus, alliums, galanthus, coleus and miscellaneous spring flowering bulbs, plus perennials and summer bedding plants. Bulbs are grown and sold in-house, with alstroemeria available as both garden ready plants and jumbo plugs, dahlias subdivided into ball, cactus, decorative, dwarf, fimbriated, pompon and waterlily groups, and lilies spanning Oriental hybrids, Oriental x Trumpet, longiflorum and trumpet groups.
How to Get in Touch
The nursery takes mail order through the official site and offers phone ordering during the peak season. Retail and mail order both run to the bulb dispatch calendar, with lilies and tulips shipping in autumn and alstroemeria garden ready plants going out in late spring.
