Historical Evolution
Sumirin Forestry Landscaping Co., Ltd. was founded on 1 April 1977 as “Sumirin Ryokka Co., Ltd.”, a green-spaces subsidiary of Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd., with initial capital of 30 million yen. In 1982 the company took over the landscaping sales work of its parent, and in 1984 adopted its present name “Sumitomo Forestry Landscaping Co., Ltd.” while raising capital to 100 million yen; in 1991 capital was raised again to 200 million yen, with 100% of shares held by Sumitomo Forestry. A directly-operated construction subsidiary, Sumirin Exterior Co., Ltd., was established in 1993. The post-construction garden-care service for Sumitomo Forestry homeowners, called Ai Green, began in 2001. The head office moved to its current location in Nakano-ku, Tokyo in 2010. In 2017 the company marked its 40th anniversary; in 2018 it merged with Sumirin Nousan Kogyo Co., Ltd., bringing soil amendments and culture soils into the group portfolio.
Business Structure
The company operates through four business divisions — Housing Greenery, Environmental Greenery, Materials, and Materials (Agricultural) — serving housing, urban and agricultural customers. The Housing Greenery Division works with the Sumitomo Forestry Housing Business Headquarters to design plantings and exterior spaces for “Sumitomo Forestry Homes”, and handles large-scale subdivision landscaping with unified landscape design and after-care. The Environmental Greenery Division provides end-to-end consultation, design, construction and after-care for corporate, governmental and municipal clients, including designated management of Osaka Prefectural Hanano Bunka-en, Osaka Prefectural Forest and Tonboike Park. The Materials Division procures and sells landscaping materials and trees through a national supply network covering Hokkaido to Kyushu; the Agricultural Division develops, produces and sells soil amendments and culture soils at the Tobishima Plant and the Shinshiro Plant.
Flagship Brands and Projects
The company maintains a portfolio of identifiable programme brands across ecology and corporate value. In biodiversity, the lead programme is “Harmonic Plants”, a plant-selection methodology that balances landscape aesthetics with local ecology, which won the Good Design Award in 2012; in 2018 the Forest Garden Hadno detached-housing community became the first residential project in Japan to receive ABINC certification. In low-carbon transport, the Midori-haibin modal-shift programme combines rail, sea and other low-emission modes in partnership with JR Freight, Nippon Express and Kawasaki Kisen to reduce transport-stage CO2. In corporate greenery value, the Midori Value service supports corporate clients in visualizing their greenery assets for ESG disclosure and sustainable branding.
Qualifications, Certifications and Scale
The company maintains a full set of construction qualifications, technical staff and quality-management systems. Construction permits cover the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism licence (Toku-7) No. 7735 for civil engineering, landscaping and scaffolding/civil works, with registered architect offices in Tokyo and Osaka. As of 1 January 2026 the company employs 746 staff, including 212 Chief Managing Engineers (landscape and civil), 221 first-class Landscape Construction Management Engineers, 140 first-class Civil Construction Management Engineers, and 13 tree doctors. Quality and environmental management: ISO environmental management and ISO quality management certifications were obtained in 2002, with the ISO quality management certification extended in 2018 and 2019 to cover environmental greenery and agricultural operations respectively. Consolidated sales for the fiscal year ending December 2025 were 26.3 billion yen. The company’s original work has been recognised repeatedly: Harmonic Plants won the Good Design Award in 2012; a Burning-Field phytoremediation technique for oil-contaminated soil using Japanese turf received the Good Design Award in 2018; an original Wood Deck and the “Line Fit” product received the Wood Design Award in 2023 and 2024, and the Kids Design Award in 2023.
Designated Management and International Operations
Recent business emphasis has been on park operation and overseas market expansion. Designated management of Osaka Prefectural Hanano Bunka-en began in 2016, with Osaka Prefectural Forest added in 2022 and Tonboike Park in 2023, building a multi-tier portfolio spanning urban parks, natural parks and corporate grounds. Internationally, the company began landscape-materials trade in 2019 from a Los Angeles base, and in 2022 entered the Australian market to deliver landscape works, gradually extending the Japanese landscaping-engineering know-how overseas.
