Nursery Background
ISELI Nursery, headquartered in Boring in the U.S. state of Oregon, is a family-run wholesale grower founded by Jean Iseli in the mid-1970s and devoted to rare and dwarf conifers, Japanese maples, Living Art® specimens, and ornamental shrubs and trees. From its origins as a small propagation effort, the nursery has grown into a wholesale supplier serving independent garden centers and professional landscapers across the United States and Canada. A memorial garden built at the main office by Jean’s brother André commemorates the founder, whose passion for conifers and Japanese maples reshaped how rare cultivars are shared with gardeners and designers throughout North America.
Product Lines
The catalog centers on Colorful Conifers®, Fanciful Gardens®, Jack Frost® and Pacific Rim® maple collections, the Living Art® program, and a wide selection of companion plants and trees. Across more than 23 conifer genera, the nursery offers hundreds of cultivars spanning junipers, spruces, pines, hemlocks, yews, and cryptomerias, alongside Japanese maples, full-moon maples, hybrid Korean maples, Enkianthus, holly, hydrangea, ferns, mondo grass, and carefully chosen companion trees such as birch, katsura, dogwood, dove tree, beech, ginkgo, hornbeam, and stewartia. The guiding idea of “12 Months of Color®” shapes plant selection, so gardens carry structure, texture, and seasonal interest through the entire year.
History and Heritage
Jean Iseli turned from mathematics to horticulture in 1975, drawn by an enduring fascination with rare and dwarf conifers and Japanese maples. Through extensive correspondence with collectors and enthusiasts around the world, he drove the commercialization of many cultivars that had previously circulated only within specialist circles. After his passing in 1986, the nursery continued under family stewardship, working alongside partner growers across North America to expand the color conifer, Japanese maple, and Living Art® programs that define the brand today.
Wholesale Operations and Customer Pathways
ISELI operates strictly on a wholesale basis and does not sell directly to the public. Independent garden centers and landscape professionals across the United States and Canada source plants through the sales and customer service team, complete a credit application, and supply a state resale certificate. Customers can review a sales territory map and the annual catalog (2026 / 2027) to align plant orders with regional demand and project timelines, while the Garden Size designations help designers anticipate mature dimensions after 10 to 25 years of growth.
Visiting and Engagement
The nursery itself is an active working wholesale farm and is not equipped for public tours, so visits are arranged through the sales and customer service team or through scheduled group tours organized by garden clubs, colleges, and the American Conifer Society. Home gardeners can find ISELI plants at local independent garden centers and through professional landscapers, while the customer service team responds to inquiries by email and online contact form rather than by phone. The annual catalog, the Jean Iseli Memorial Garden, and the nursery’s online resources continue to share the founder’s plant-centered vision with new generations of gardeners and designers.
